The new colour coding in the HUD (and the highly configurable auto-scanner) are nice enhancements. Can I suggest extending the system to pilot names elsewhere in the UI?
By placing a coloured square (like the green/red online/offline indicator) or perhaps a single pixel box around the name it would allow you to quickly and easily distinguish friend from foe in local, non-passworded chat channels, station guest lists, gang/chat requests, etc.
Gang requests would benefit in particular as the dialog is modal so you can't do a show info to check, and if you accept a sneaky gang invite from an enemy they can immediately use it to warp to you. OTOH if you reject a gang invite it often ends up bugged until the gang is reformed, not to mention ****ing off whoever is doing the invites ;). Some extra colour coding would also be great for quickly scanning local when on a/p and about to warp to the next gate.
Thoughts?

Personally I would like to see the blocks of colour you get on the HUD icons to be placed in the chat channels, replacing the online/offline identifier you get when someone is in your addressbook. After all... if they're in local, they're online!

Genius Idea Mr Mark - I'd like to see this added into the scanner (both auto and range / direction)
Not sure about including it the chat channels too - it might make things a bit more laggy. Provided there wasn't a performance issue tho I could run with it.

I don't think there would be much extra lag, and if so it could just do things like dialog boxes instantly, and fill-in the info for chat channels over a few seconds.
I'd agree that the online/offline indicator is redundant most places except the address book, bounty list, etc., which aren't critical anyway...
