this is my current setup:
low:
*cross lateral gyro stabelizer I *small ineffecient repair unit *100mm reinforced nanofiber plates
med:
* 2x small shield extender II *cold arcjet gas injector
High: 3x 200 mm autocannon II (hail S charge) 1x 0E-5200 rocket launcher (thorn rockets)
I'm running lvl 1 missions and i think i'm doing something wrong. How do i know what my optimal range of my AC's are for instance?
Any suggestions on other good builds are welcome! (and try to use full names op gear cause i don't know everything bout the game yet :d)
Thanks in advance!!

Trying to do two things at once (such as armor and shield tanking, and fitting two different ranges of weaponry) generally makes you suck at both.
Additionally, in PVE, it's all about the "long game" - thus plates and extenders are (generally speaking) not going to do you much good. There are exceptions for this rule once you can fly battlecruisers and/or T2 cruisers, but it's completely safe to ignore these for now.
There's really two things you're looking to do when you run a mission: gank, and tank (and in that order, really). You want as much "gank" (or damage) as you can fit onto your ship without having to warp out ("tank").
So you'll be looking to stack up on the resists for the race that you're fighting (such as kin/thm for Guristas, and Exp/kin for Angels, and Kin/Thm for Serpentis) - and then have a rep that you can run for some extended time period. This fulfills the "tank" portion of the mission. There is also the use of an afterburner in level 1 missions as a tank, but I don't recommend it for new players.
So the other thing you're going to want to do is "gank". This is stacking as much damage as you can and leveling it all at the same time against a single enemy (concentration of fire).
So the general idea would be: Get the mission Find out the mission is against Guristas, and fit the appropriate hardeners (if any). Fit the appropriate ammo (for Minmatar against Guristas, phased plasma). Don't forget to put some in the cargo hold. :p
Warp to the mission and gain "aggro" from the rats. Release drones if you have any (you don't). Pick a nearby enemy and shoot them.
Beware of large groups of enemies that are spread out. These are called "spawns" of enemies, and attack as a group. You don't want to aggro more than one group at a time.
Well, that's the basics, anyway... I'm sure some more advanced mission people can tell you more. Also, find a good player corp... the noob corps are full of lots of misinformation. Akita T runs a good corp that does group mission running, and The Avalon Foundation (one of my old corps) is a great corporation with helpful people as well.

FWIW I'm also a noob in a Rifter(well I just upgraded to a Rupture) and I found that fitting a medium shield extender made a world of difference. With the huge passive buffer level 1 missions are easy as pie and some level 2's are doable as well(though better in a cruiser). You may need some engineering skills and a PDS or two to fit the MSE but it really does make the Rifter a noob mission-running beast, I don't think I ever got below 50% shields on Lvl. 1 missions.
Fit 150 ACs for better tracking, maybe a gyro, and maybe hardeners to complement the MSE and you will not be disappointed.
P.S. Don't mix armor/shield tank, focus on one.

To be blunt, range is generally your best bet in missions. Most L1 mission rats have very short damage ranges, so all you need to do is be able to orbit outside of that range and shoot them. Using autos is doable, but you'll probably need good support skills and be prepared to warp out if things get hairy.
But yeah, mixing your tanking methods is always a no-no. PVE fit means you have free midslots, which means shield tank, so you've got the right idea with the extenders. If you ditch the AB you should just about be able to squeeze a medium shield extender on instead of the two smalls, which will help a lot. And since your weapons don't use cap, you can stuff your low slots with shield power relays. Depending on your fitting skills you might be able to fit a hardener and/or shield recharger in the mids as well to help tank a little better.
Also, you have far too much money if you're using T2 guns and ammo for L1 missions...

A couple of things: I simply don't fly gunships without T2 guns. They're generally both cheaper and better than best named.
Another thing: autos work fine in L1 missions... It's L2's I'd worry about. Though in the end, the Thrasher makes mince meat of L1's much better than the Rupture (more guns and an easier time fitting the MSE).

Using a PDS or two I was able to fit the MSE, T2 ACs, and an afterburner which is perma-run...with a few engineering skills I don't think he needs to drop the AB to make it all fit.
