so today was the first time I've been killed by a player, I offered to help someone in SWA chat who was asking, I fly to the system he was in (motsu) then warp to him. His mate who was not in the fleet was with him, he scrammed me then started shooting me till I was down to my hull, I got ransomed, then he killed me anyway
so the things I learned are:
- don't trust anyone I don't know
- possibly use warp stabaliser if grouping with people I don't know
- take note of how much my ship and modules cost in case I do get ransomed
what I don't understand though was how this guy in the battleship was able to shoot and kill me without concord coming and killing him, motsu is 0.9 sec status afaik and I was under the impression they would come and kill him if he attacked me, the whole thing lasted probably just under a minute and they never showed. And I never shot back at him at all
thanks in advance for helping me learn from my mistakes and i hope this doesn't sound like a whine thread

I'm still a newb, but I think that people in your gang can take pot shots at you without CONCORD getting nasty. But if I am wrong I am sure it will be pointed out quickly with a kindly STFU newb.

Search for something called The Lofty Scam.
Basically, the guy shooting you was in a corp at war with the guy you were helping. If you join a fleet with someone at war with someone else you become a war target.
Basically, don't help people you don't know

I have to chime in on this. Names not revealed for a reason. Last night I was mission running in "a system". Player w/ -1.# in local asks for help on a level 3 mission. He is in a drake, I am in a drake. I am skeptical.
Converstaion ensues with person asking for help. A 3rd party gets involved in the convo in local. Needless to say, 3rd party and I decide to help this guy after about an hour of banter. The person needing help gives 3rd party a BM in station. 3rd party and myself fleet up. I am nervous as I JUST put rigs on my drake. I follow behind to make sure all is legit.
I was fully expecting to get ganked or scammmed or some such. I was wrong. This turned out to be one of the most fun nights of Eve I have ever had. Person asking for help was legit, 3rd party was legit, we had a blast clearing out 10/10 of Kidnappers Strike (10 BS spawn).
I admit I was very concerned as to his motives but after all is said and done, there are some good people left in this game. Needless to say being cautious paid off for myself and 3rd party and for the person requesting help. I have added both to my AB and look forward to getting together with them again at some point in the future. Good times in this game are not dead. Not everyone is a scammer. But you do have to be carefull and make sure you are not exposing yourself to something undesireable.
If you guys read this: Thanks for last night! It was awesome and I thank you both for re-affirming my faith in humanity.

If i remember it good. He will be able to engage you under concord eyes for the next 24hours.

Friend got burned like this, but after seeing the 3rd person in gang while in mid-warp he quickly left it and got away clean. I think it applies only if you were shot. If you were shot even once, i don't think leaving the gang will make the agro go away, someone who does it, feel free to either confirm or deny it.

The bit I've left there I think is important. If this is the wartarget gang scam, this shouldn't have been possible if the player you went to help was also in SWA. The reason being you can't ever be at war with a noob corp, such as SWA.
Are you sure the third party wasn't in SWA as well? That is about the only way this would have been possible as far as I'm aware.

from what Monkey Saturday was saying I'm guessing he left swa and joined whatever corp soon after asking people in the channel and i hadn't realized he had left since i was talking to him in private messages soon after i offered to help

The really nasty thing about the Lofty scam is that the "bait" character is not in war at the point of accepting fleet.
IF helping people you don't know, I'd suggest YOU start the fleet so you can decide who to invite to the fleet.

Leaving the gang BEFORE they open fire on you will work, leaving the gang just as they have you targeted will most likely get them concorded, leaving the gang AFTER they have shot at you will not save your ship, but will save your pod. :)

The Character who invites the Victim IS involved with a war, with their ACCOMPLICE (wars take 24-48 hours to fully initiate, so how else could the Lofty work?) and when they invite you to Fleet (doesn't work if the Victim performs the invite) their Accomplice flies in and attacks the Victim. At no time can the initiating char allowed to attack the Victim.
How do I know? I've run it. It works.

I'll be honest - I'm not certain. The above seems somewhat more complicated, but might work within the game mechanics.

I actually had a member of REPO agree to a 1 vs. 1 to structure, and he fleeted me up and dropped a can. Obviously, when I stole from the can (being in his gang) I wasn't aggro'd to him, however, when he mistakenly scrammed and fired on me, Concord was quick to point out his mistake.
I felt bad, offered my apologies, and he was quick to point out the error was his. (Another shout out to REPO, a class bunch of guys.)
