Hmmm; I see wormholes it a bit different ...
I see a wormhole as a fast traveling option where you can cross a few jumps at once... ( such as used in Digital Anvil's: Freelancer )
This would be a good option to counter or get past a known enemy / pirate blockade at a specific gate. Just fly a few jumps back, go through the wormhole, and your past it. Or you can split up your gang and try to flank the enemy from the other side.
Player pirates can have a benifit in it too, as they can use wormholes to avoid sentry guns  ?
Lot's of tactical variations that way   Anyone got better other / ideas ?

This crossed my mind as well but then that would be too much of an carebare function wouldnt it?
If you could controll where you would end up...
My idea was in generall that it could be used both as I imagined it and as you do but the
main thing of this should be that it is totaly unpredictable where you will end up...
That would spice things up a bit for sure! 
Regarding using some other means of jumpin to clear long distances that is coming I'm sure
since there has been official reports of findings of those old jump gates...
Exciting times ahead indeed!
