I want to know what "ELO-style Rankings" are.
Are you rated by how large your hair is? How little of your face is actually visible behind the beard and sunglasses? How good your falsetto harmonies sound? Whether you know all the words to "Don't Bring Me Down"?
And what on earth are they going to use these rankings for?
Deciding who gets the blueprint for the huge round yellow rotating spaceship?

It's definitely a hair thing. I think the rankings are based on how close you can get to Jeff Lynne's heinous mane.

From Wikipedia: The ELO rating system is a method for calculating the relative strength of chess players.
Elo suggested estimating the true skill of players by updating their ratings when they won or lost against other players, based on a comparison with the other player's ratings. If a player won more games than he was expected to win, his rating would be adjusted upward, while if he won fewer games than expected his rating would be adjusted downward. ------ .sig? I don't need no steenking .sig! |

this sounds suspiciously like levitation via manual upward shoeleather conveyance. Where does it START? The base "expectations" have to come from somewhere, right? Were known chess players assigned some arbitrary rating to seed the system, or what...?

I'd guess as it's all relative the rankings would sort themselves out quite fast. The best example of this system (I think) that applies to me is the LaserSquad Nemesis League Tables.
But what would it be used for in Eve? A PvP league table?

The system I joined - which basically worked the same way, but I don't know if it was exactly the same scoring system - assigned you a rating of 1300 if you'd never played before. Presumable when the system itself first started, everybody was awarded a rating of 1300, which would go up if they beat all the other 1300s, and go down if they lost to them all. It wouldn't take that long to sort itself out.

thanks for the info. One wonders why, if one is pulling a number from one's posterior anyway, why start with "1300," but oh well
