There is nothing about them in the player guide that IŠve found (something you should look at perhaps CCP?) and some of the available material on the wiki are out dated IŠve been told. Is there an updated guide or forum thread that I can have a read through.
Of course if someone wants to reply to this post with some basic explanation on how they work that would also be much appreciated :)

Quick guide:
To get a R&D agent you need
1) Science V, some level in laboratory operation (can't recall the exact value) at least 1 science subset skill (electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, ecc) with relative prerequisites matching a science subset skill of the agents (minimum level of 1, you need to match what the skill, not the level) and sufficient standing with the agent.
2) you go to the agent and speak with him, asking him to start a research for you.
3) after a time variable from 12 hours to 1 week the agent will start sending mails asking you to run missions for him (usually the first agent is very slow, wisit him can get you a mail sooner). The missions are very easy and fall in 2 categories: a) bring me tritanium and b) move this 0.5 m3 package some jump.
Doing the missions don't give standing or isk but double the RP points produced in the day and count for getting storyline missions.
After getting a agent to research for you you start accruing RP whit him. After you have at least 50 you get to buy datacores with them.
5) to get more than 1 agent you need Research project management.
Edit look this thread it is fairly old but the part on RP and agents is good. The part on T2 BPo is no more valid instead.

What corp in gallente have R&D agents? and would working for them lower my standings with amarr ?

R&D agents do nothing but give you Research Points. Generally they are so widely scattered that it is pointless to try running the one mission per day available.
Running missions will not affect your standings with other factions, unless you do it regularly and get the odd storyline vs/ that faction.
You will need certain prerequisite skills to use the agent, so when you find the R&D corp you want to use and an agent your standings allow make sure to look at the agent details.
For gallente: CreoDron, Duvolle Laboratories
For Minmatar: Core Complexion, Boundless Creation
For Amarr: Carthum Conglomerate, Viziam
For Caldari: Lai Dai, Kaalakiota
Bold being the primary research corp for the faction.

Excellent, thanks for the info. I have an agent started now. I figure why not let those RPs tick up since it requires minimum effort on my part (especially if you donŠt do the missions). To bad about the T2 BPO lottery not being done anymore, that would have been a nice bonus if one was lucky enough to get that. Who knowŠs maybe they will seed some T3 BPO through them in the future though :))
