I'm wondering which Assault Frigate is best to train for if you're looking for small gang pvp / solo pvp. Thanks

The Wolf and Jaguar are known as the best of the worst. e.g., don't train assault frigs because they suck.
Eventually, some day, maybe, the devs say they'll boost them... but for now, train an interceptor or use a cruiser.

So, Interceptors are generally better for pvp then assault frigates? How about AF's for exploration?

If you've got a longer term goal to shoot for HACs, train AFs, but in the meantime, they really aren't worth flying. Make sure you avoid the Hawk, though. It's the worst ship of the worst class in the game. . . .

Don't make it sound worse than it is. There are lots of worse ships than the Hawk.

Edited by: Deadeye Devie on 27/03/2008 08:36:08 AFs are one of the most fun class in this game....even though aty the moment they have no role and are a little broken. Buyt as we speak the Devs are working on fixes...lowering mass, etc...
the Jag is a beast of a frigate and can tank lvl 4 missions, but lacks the DPS to kill the big targets, and the wolf is a good frig arti platform with some serious musclke behind it. My new favourite toy has to be the ishkur due to its good frig class armour resists and that it can carry 2 full sets of light drones and use a full 5 at 1 time, making it a nasty lil boat...and at the mo, i have just finished Amarr frigs lvl 5 and am having fun fitting a Vengance. My next aim is to get Caldari sorted n trained and then i can fly all frigs in the game, as at the moment i dont use and dont know too much about the caldari end of things. All in all, if you like small fast powerful ships that would fit into a small scale roaming gang. if i were to train for AFs i would most likely aim for a Jag first, as it has an amazing capability for shield tanking, and is very fast, meaning all you would have to train for, being cald, would be small projectiles and minnie frings....another option would be go for amarr frigs, due to the vengence being a rockets boat, meaning you can use your missle skills....but then its an armour tank boat.....these 2 are personally the ones i find best in the game, followed 3rd by the ishkur. any questions, feel free to pm me in game or send an eve-mail.

In terms of bang for your buck? Name one.
Personally, I can't think of another ship without a single role. The Hawk has none that I can imagine, except maybe tanking some particular missions or complexes in a group.

At least it's good for PVE.

I enjoyed flying the retribution in gang. Something like this works really well:
[Retribution, New Setup 1] 2xHeat Sink II 1xTracking Enhancer II 1xThermic Plating II 1xAdaptive Nano Plating II
1x1MN MicroWarpdrive II
4xMedium Pulse Laser II, Scorch S [empty high slot]
Close to 200dps with scorch and hits upto 25km, so can useually (at gates) do instant damage in a fight. Wouldn't go solo with it though ;)

Here's another vote for the Hawk being the worst ship in the game. It would still be the worst even if it had vaguely sensible CPU and grid. As it is, it's a pointless, impossible-to-fit ship with terrible bonuses.
If only it had a bonus to missile explosion velocity...

I'm not saying the ship doesn't need help but fit it with precisions and you create a 25k:ish "no fly zone" for all inties going below 6k. Oh sure a Caracal does the same thing and better at that but well.... At least it locks fast. I've killed many, many pods with mine.
The Blarpy is excellent fun though, if it only went 5-600 m/s faster with a T2 MWD fitted than it does atm. Being slower than a caracal is just demeaning.

I wouldn't agree... I mean, having killed Hawks in a Rifter while using T1 ammo (!) and having massacred well-fitted ones in a cheap AC Thrasher (!) I have to point out it's the crappiest AF of the whole lot.

Assault Frigates in my opinion have a small role but excel in the right conditions - and fail miserably in others.
You can solo-pvp/pirate in them if you know your ships limitations and engage soft targets. Their high sensor resolution allows you to get some pod locks and that can mean the difference between a 50-100 mil pod ransom or not.
DO NOT - engage 1v1 vs a tech 1 cruiser/battlecruiser unless you think the pilot is a complete noob or is ratting. A pvp fit cruiser class ship will tear you apart (they will either tank you if you're setup for range, or web and neut you if you're setup for close range dps - their medium sized turrets will eat your hull for lunch when you're capped out and not moving).
That said - they really excell in gangs. When I think of a role for an Assault Frigate - I try to find one that does its job better than a tech 1 cruiser (because of insurance a tech 1 cruiser can usually do the same job better and for less isk).
This is where the quick lock is crucial. If you are at war, or are in 0.0 a sensor boosted assault frigate with a web, or an assault frigate with dual webs is an ideal companion to a warp scrammign interceptor.
No sane interceptor pilot risks their ship by going into web/neut range - so they will orbit at 24-30 km and scram your target. Ofcourse the target is freakin' out and is burning back to the gate to jump through to safety. Unfortunately for him, your quick locking assault frigate locks and webs the target and renders him stuck. Normally Assault frigates aren't as good as tackling as interceptors are due to their poor speed - however in a gate camp they have the advantage that their opponent not only has to start from 0 speed, but is also burning towards you (because you will be parked at 0 on the gate).
It is in this niche application that a microwarp drive isn't mandatory on an assault frigate. A perma running afterburner will serve you better. Afterburners do not blow up your sig radius, and even if you're webbed - the slight boost in speed plus your tiny signature give you just enough transversal to avoid most medium turret and larger gun fire. Your cap is also more readily available.
I use a Blaster Harpy with an afternurner, a nos (incase you get neutralized, the small nos cycles quick enough to keep your cap running - it's saved me plenty of times) - and a small active tank. A passive tank will invariably increase your sig radius which is the last thing you want as an assault frigate trying to dodge enemy fire. I have been known to forgo the small active tank and fit a tracking disruptor to ensure the enemy can't hit me. Its chancy - and you have to make sure they don't use missiles, and prioritize killing their drones if they're using them.
The small guns on an assault frigate make them excellent for killing drones, which is very useful for gangs.
They're fun ships to fly - some of my best pvp moments have been at the helm of a Harpy blasting away at a Megathron, or a very close call I had vs an Arbitrator Pilot in a 1v1 match.
I've learned a lot on game mechanics flying (and dying hehehe) in these ships. Not to mention its great squishing pods in this ship. Its not too skill intensive to get them fully tech 2 fitted - and you can have an awesome fit when you eventually train up advanced weapon upgrades. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Get in a blaster harpy, and ruin that noob thorax's day (your top two resists are the thorax's main attack types).
Ignore my advice if that 'noob' has ecm drones. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

For solo go jag, ishkur, vengeance or harpy.
Gang go wolf, retri or harpy (mabye vengeance as heavy tackler). I can't think of my the enyo or hawk can do that the harpy can't do better (I suppose enyo can put out a bit more dps in a gang but retri is good for this because it doesn't have to worry about range)

I honestly don't understand why that ship has enough room for a full complement of medium drones. They have the vexor for drones - why should their gank turret ship still have a 50 m^3 drone bay? I think that medium drone bay seals the deal for that ship as tops for tier 3 cruisers (edging out the Rupture and its 30 m^3 drone bay).
If they made it so the Thorax had a 35 m^3 bay they would be limited to a full complement of light drones - and it would still have the largest drone bay of all the race's tier 3 cruisers.
But I'm derailing this AF thread by complaining about a slightly overpowered tech 1 cruiser.
You did well to test out the guy's drones outside of web range. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

I'll second that explosion velocity bonus - and give the damn ship a 5th missile slot (and the cpu to fit the damned thing).
If CCP did that I would actually bother to fly a Hawk - until then I'd either fly a Harpy or a Caracal. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.
