Ahoy techies!
Situation: Just bought a computer for ú 450-ish which is waaay over my budget already, planning on selling a kidney if things get out of hand, but anyway... To the matter at hand:
I've tried running EVE on Linux but simply put: EVE was built for Windows, period. Spending even more ISK on an OS (**** is expensive ) is out of the question, so my last hope of playing on a Windows machine is: Windows Server 2003.
Now I have no idea how things are built compared to XP, but since it appears to be essentially a Windows OS with attached serverapps, would it be possible to play EVE on Windows Server 2003?
It's either WinServ2k3 (I get it free) or Linux, and I would really prefer sticking to Windows simply because Linux, in all it's holy glory, is still linux. I use because it's fun to tinker with, not because EVE works.

I did use server 2003 as first os on my new pc a couple of years ago. 2003 is xp, but with more file protection, slower startup and more focused on processes then programs.
Any how, heres the guide i used: http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/

I'm currently running Win2k3 (Enterprise) on my workstation as my main OS for a few years now and I can tell you that it runs EVE (as nearly every other app/game) perfectly. There's not much that it can't run that does run under WinXP.
You need to do a bit of tweaking when you want to use it as a workstation though. Win2k3 has disabled graphics acceleration and DirectX by default, user account setup can't be easily done through the control panel, there's a shutdown event tracker that asks for a reason each time you want to shut your pc down, etc. You can find a guide how to convert Win2k3 from a server to a workstation OS here.
Hope this helps :>

Damn that's a relief, current financial situation is somewhere in the -ú580 area, so this will save me a ton of cash.
Thanks for the replies, looking forward to setting this up.

Hello again
So, I've managed to set everything up for EVE, and it runs on Premium with max settings perfectly (I've been drooling over my REAPER for 15min now :P), but there's 1 problem that's going to need fixing before I can do anything productive in EVE.
Sound! Now my built-in soundcard came with drivers etc so that's working, but the issue is that I'm using a USB Headset, and apparently Windows Server 2003 doesn't come with the same drivers as Windows XP, so no automatic detection and Plug'n'Play. I've desperately searched the internet for answers but information on the matter is very limited... And before you even ask, manufacturers suck so they won't be of much use.
Would it be possible to somehow extract drivers from Windows XP and shove 'em into Server to get the Plug'n'Play that Windows survives on? Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |

Everything mentioned in the guide I had already done, so the issue is not that the soundconfig is wrong, but that Windows doesn't realize there is a USB Sound Device plugged in at all. I assume this is driver-related, because I can't think of anything else that could affect it...
I also heard somewhere that Windows Server 2003 isn't delivered with the same drivers as Windows XP, and since USB Audio drivers are assumed to be included in the OS (All Windows past 98 iirc?) there doesn't seem to be anyplace I can get it. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |
