I recently built a new computer for myself. Last night while I was surfing on it I had a rather funny idea of making it into "Hal" by getting sound bits, or making my own, of Hal's conversations and loading them as window sounds (IE Hal saying "Hello Dave" When I start the computer up and windows loads).
What I would also like to do is somehow mount an "eye" onto the front of my case and even have it glow red, either by use of an internal battery or somehow hooking it up to the PSU. I dont want to spend or send the PSU off for customization so really im looking for the "10 minute project option" if you will.
So basicly what I am looking for is the Hal EyE and a program that I can use to emulate Hal's voice. Does anyone know where I can begin?

Get a red light bulb and mount a lamp inside your PC, then hire stephen hawking and get him to modulate his voice for you. Then you can park him next to your PC and voila!!, instant HAL effect.
P.s. I'm a huge fan of Mr Hawking, he's my hero so don't go thinking I've got anything against disabled people. It's just a joke

Interesting concept, although i question the practicality of having a large red "eye" over the location where your CD ROM drives would normally be. (Unless you have a door over them)
If you either aren't going to use that spot, or have a door you can mount the "eye" on, I would imagine that a solid red plastic lens-shaped eye, with a black plastic mounting bezel would work.
As far as lights go, that's a bit trickier. Remember that the HAL computer's "eye" lit up from the OUTSIDE edge.. So you would want a clear plastic diffuser ring mounted just below the black mounting bezel, and white LED lights mounted on the outside of the diffuser ring. That would distribute the light evenly around the red lens, and the red plastic would filter out all wavelengths of light except red.
NOT a "10 minute" project to do it properly. Some of the parts might be hard to find, or you would have to fabricate them yourself. But if you do it properly, it would look very cool.

The case I have is a slighly diffrent version of the Cooler Master Centurion 5 featured here (Slightly diffrent in that its right panel is a window side panel, actually you can see the exact model in the gallery).
My two optical drives are in the bottom two of the five 5.25 inch bays so I figure I can put the eye on the top 3 if I can find one at about 3-4 inchs in length.
From the looks of it ill have to fabricate the eye myself as I cant find anything remotely close to it even on eBay.

Get a couple red LED's from radioshack, appropriate round eye thing (not sure where to get that from), and wire them into one of the 5V molenex connectors all PSUs have a million of.

Surprisingly its super quiet. I have I think 5 fans
1 in the PSU 2 in the Case 1 on the CPU 1 on the GPU
I imagine it will get louder over time but that will likely be due to a dust build up. I have a ton of MaximumPC mags and I know one of them has an article on making a filter so I need to find that...
As for the mod I want to do, I am plain shocked that there is nothing remotely approaching the lense used for Hal. I did come accross an article that said the guy actually used vacu fit or something called that along those lines but apparently thats insanely expensive to do. Ill be sure to update this thread when I get more info.

I think you should somehow come up with a creative way to make a a regular PC video cam mounted to your monitor resemble the Eye.
Look in novelty stores and such for giant eyes that would be large enough to hold the cam.
As for making it sound like Hal's voice use some editing software and record sound bites from the actual movies and use those for any number of the computer voice programs that are available.

Been thinking about that too for awhile.
I have seen HAL 9000 cases on ebay, but they sure are expensive and must suck in all thats named cooling.
BUT! the "eye" is a common item on ebay. sells for not too much i believe and saves you ALOT of work, problem is to mount it though.
Sounds i have no idea, atleast not to make it play it up once you start the computer, seen it be done though. -----------------------------

Interesting fact - if you replace each of the letters in HAL with the subsequent letter in the alphabet, you get an interesting result.
