I am thinking of adding this marker to my 2d maps, and was wondering broadly how useful this would be to FCs and others?
Not essential, but a nice to have? Not really that useful?

Only thing I can think of, would be coordinating warp-ins to a given area. Knowing that from one end to the other is xxx AU and it takes yy seconds from A to B and zz seconds from C to B with everyone at full speed and aligned, could make for a nice attack from multiple directions....
But, since that is usually not how big fights are, there probably is no point in it...

Pretty much this. Good to know where those 100 AU+ warps are for ships that have not so good capacitors.

well, id be very gratefull, knowing that is not much of an advantage, but sometimes having any advantage can be decisive

system size lets you know where warp speed actually matters unfortunately that is not true for most systems

Not really. I love the 2D maps and one of the reasons I love it is because there is not much stuff so it is very easy to read.
Show us an example of the markers? (do it for a small region)

Rather than actually write the AU radius, I would use a single character that shows the "group" it is in.
eg. 1-10au = group 1 11-20au= group 2 21-30au= group 3 etc
The marker would likely be a number in a circle and wouldn't impact heavily on the readability of the map. -- 2d EveMaps My blog

IMO not very useful but nice to have, would be more useful if it was a measure of the furthest warpable object from the sun or something similar. Furthest distance between gates in the system maybe?
BTW. Thanx for the maps, have been using them extensively as I move around in the EVE universe to get to know the neighboring systems of the one I set camp in.

I think it will be very nice to know how fat certain systems are. Especially when you're planning on a belt rush and find out that the nearest belt is 70au away from the jump in point.
Definate yes on this, would be very helpful(for me atleast) When in doubt, Ctrl-Q. |

Large AU systems that are lowsec generally are a haven for pirates as they have more time to get to gate, etc. I think it is definately useful knowledge, but not critical to have in a 2D map.
Btw, great maps...helps immensely.

For people doing 0.0 freighter runs that info would be very useful as it can take a good 10mins to warp across the larger systems.

Nobody mentioned probes so far. It is easier to probe someone in a small system because it is harder for them to get on a ss outside of probing range. In a large system you can always change position when you see probes on scan. In a small system, you might be in probe range all the time.
There are a couple of small systems with less than 10 AU radius. These system can be real death traps at times. You do not want to stay in there fore too long when you are being followed or you have ****ed off some local corps.
=> System size is very useful to know
and I know a couple more reasons than this...
If you want to divide system into groups based on their size, here is a suggestion:
group 1: 1-10 AU; (10 AU is the range of Fathom probes) group 2: 10-14 AU; (14 AU is maximum directional scan range) group 3: 14-20 AU; ("typical small system") group 4: 20-100 AU ("typical large system") group 5: >100 AU ("very large system")

Thanks for the responses- remember though that this would be the radius, not diameter of the systems. I assume radius is sun to furthest warpable object.
I can't really do furthest warpable object or anything fancy, as that sort of think isn't in the datadump, and would require me or someone feeding me intel to visit every single system to make this complete. And this isn't practical tbh. -- 2d EveMaps My blog

Good idea, though I will subdivide the group 4 into a few more, just because it'll be more accurate for people. -- 2d EveMaps My blog

I don't think knowing all of the system sizes would be greatly beneficial, however if you could tag the ones that are 50au warps and up into a few categories that would be awesome!

Agreed, perhaps though since its not usually vital information, you could either just use very small text for the system size, or divide it up into 4 or 5 categories, say...
small <5au medium <20au large <60au huge <100au insane >175au

Hmm, unless I am misunderstanding radius, the data CCP have supplied doesn't tie up with my testing.
For instance, in Sendaya, I warp to the sun, and the furthest warpable object is 23au away. I assume this is how radius is calculated? Yet the dump says 18.9au. Am I misinterpreting something? -- 2d EveMaps My blog

Maybe they are not taking all warpable objects into account. Maybe "radius" means distance to farthest planet. In many systems, the farthest warpable object is a stargate that is not at a planet. Did you check if there is an object at the distance you got as "radius"?

Your maps are excellent, I've used them extensively, and can't imagine flitting about without consulting them first.
My compliments to your fine work and a deep appreciation for all the time you undoubtedly had/have to spend making them and keeping them current.
The size would determine how many probes one would need to cover all system space between planets. Now all I need is to figure out how to get the probes to midpoints, as there are no warpable objects to go to in order to place them.

First of all, posting in an Ombey thread. Your maps kick ass.
I'd agree with most people in that system size isn't an essential element but, really as an FC I don't think there's such a thing as too much information. System size would be very useful on freighter escort ops, for judging if the fleet's cap is goin to hold for the jump and for being able to quickly find large system to safespot up in when you get blobbed to hell and back, among others. ______

System size is pretty useless, it's how the planets are spread out that's important. And I'd like to see you beat the "Solar System" screen on that by using 2D maps lol.

Why not only put a designation on system with a huge au range between gates? Thats really all people would care about as the short jumps are of no consequense to planning routes and camps.

Good points, not been in-game much over the past cpl nights, but will check tonight- you could well be right, and your last point is an excellent one- thanks

Edited by: wizzard66 on 01/04/2008 08:34:40 Making maps myself, not as colorful as yours, but usefull.
Now, you maps (and mine) are shown as systems interconnected with lines to show theres a connection between them. The connection between the systems however, are through gates. So the ideal map should show distances between gates.
I once thought about calculating the warp distance from gate 2 gate and add them to the maps. Thats (not that) easy to do from the datadump, but possible (if you want i still can dig up the calculations)
However. Since I gave every system on my map a dot, it was allmost impossible to note all distances. The gate2gate are only valid within a system itself, so it would mean enlarging each system-dot to show the distances between often multiple gates.
System-size is imho irrellevant, the distance between gates and/or the distance between planets could be, but would be for 99% useless information and really clutter up the maps.
