It's a real pain - When mining you can have say 10 or more rocks at the same distance and you're trying to work out which one you're mining in the Survey Scan results when using a Survey Scanner is ****. Just stick a little icon on it. Please one of the CSM's - just poke CCP on this one. It's a small tiny change that would bring huge hurrahs from the boring bunch.
I'll post up what Yinzer Haverford wrote -- again lost in the Features and Ideas forum:
Quote:When I target an asteroid, it gets a special icon in the overview, so that I can see which specific asteroid is targeted. But my survey scanner provides no indication of which rocks are currently targeted.
Since I usually target the largest asteroids (i.e., those with the most ore) first, my survey results are sorted by quantity. As an asteroid is mined, therefore, it shifts down the list after each scan. Finding it isn't so difficult when the target is less than 10 km away from my barge, since I can use the exact range to find it. But when there are 5 different Ombers at a range of 11 km, it can be a challenge to figure out which one of them I am currently shooting.
My initial idea would be for the survey scan list to be given some kind of "target lock" icon column. This column could be dynamic in nature, just as the overview is. It would work the same way as the overview, always showing which asteroids are locked at any given moment in time, and shifting targets when an old one is unlocked or a new one is locked. That would be my preference, but perhaps there are programming challenges there that I am not aware of. The targeting indicator column could also be static, in that it would simply show which rocks were targeted at the time that the last scan was performed.
If neither of those is possible, perhaps something more basic could be arranged. At the moment, I can select (and therefore highlight the row) of multiple asteroids in my survey scan results. I can use this feature to highlight the three or four asteroids that I am currently mining. But when I run a new scan, these selections are undone, and the new list has no selected asteroids. At the very least, could the player's currently-selected asteroids be re-selected once a new scan is complete?
TL;DR - Just get this fixed!!!!! it's crazy
Also increse the Survey Scanner II range while you're there. An Orca boosted Hulk can shoot out to 26km but the Scanner's range is only 22.5km |

Yup - one little icon on the survey scanner screen on the bridge of a huge futuristic spaceship about a mile long packed with futuristic stuff would hugely make me happy.
Count me in.

This is a sensible and easily implemented big thumbs up from me.
This is one of the Miner's papercuts :If you can't do more tank or new ships then please CSM 7 -- please ask CCP to do this little thing ..You buy them beers I'll transfer iskies . I've been waiting for this for years.
I mean come on .. look at my face!

Having used the survey scanner once upon a time, I agree that there needs to be something to highlight what you have targeted.

good idea, I am not a mining fan, but when I have to do Corp mining ops. It is a great tool.
Also a current alternative can be to change your overview setting by:
-Open a new tab -right click the tab -Select ''mining" preset
it will show you all the rocks that are around you, and you will be able to know what you are currently targetting....
it wont show the quantity of the rock. But by selecting it from the overview it will most likely select it from the Survey Scanner...
voil+á, But +1 for the idea |

I support this. And something to know which asteroid my laser is on, because when an asteroid disappears the laser doesn't stop and its hard to tell which laser isn't actually doing anything, so you turn of a laser and pray and hope you didn't just cancel the wrong one. All warfare is based on deception and logistics. Battles and soldiers are secondary priorities. |

WHile at it.. maybe also show which rocks are being mined by others.. this would be a great help in larger mining operations.
Mining is too much of a waste of time for me these days, but I remember on big mining ops how annoying it could be to be mining with 20 hulks in a belt, and trying to find the rocks which aren't targetted by others, so mining is most efficient.

Supported. Lets face it, its a simple change to make that will make miner's life that little bit easier. Also, it will help the long neglected mining community feel a little better about all the recent patches.

I'm tempted to suggest having mining lasers pull in ore every few seconds instead of every few minutes just so there is less waste in a system poorly designed for player driving optimization.
Or at the very least automatically shut down a laser if the asteroid has disappeared. All warfare is based on deception and logistics. Battles and soldiers are secondary priorities. |

I am not sure if you understood what I ment. But for me it works properly, you dont see the total amount of rock but you do see all the rocks near you. Even futher than what you survey scanner can catch. It does work and it does show the rocks you are targetting |

Matching distance to rocks with current target works, but is not as useful if there were a numbered target symbol that shows turret lock.
