ok clicking through my stuff and went to set up a sell order on a couple units of a 'slow burner' item I am experimenting with... I filled in the form , setting a price just below the lowest local sellers figure (well above the highest buyers figure). Clicked ok and ???? - no sign of my order. WFT? I click round and discover that the items sold instantly.
So what gives here? The only realistic thing I can think of is that despite this being a really low volume item I just happened to sell at the very moment someone was buying. Or is there another way to buy things that is not visible in the market?

If the price of your order is equal or lower than the highest buyorder that covers your station, you will sell directly to that buyorder.

ok - so I didn't explain that properly. The highest buy order was *considerably* lower than the amount I was selling for - and I got the amount I was asking.....

Just good timing. Might want to check if you got more than your asking price. If someone was buying the next higher bid and you entered yours in the 10 or so second window while he was typing in the buy price you'd get the sale and he'd pay more than you were asking. This happens to me at least once a day as I'm modifying my orders.

One other possible sugestion/enquiry: Are you using the new functionality to ignore certain orders, such as those based in low sec?
If so, there might have been a regional buy order from a low sec station you couldnt see?

This is actually not uncommon. I once sold a Defender I for 246M.
If you enter a buy order and there is already a sell order below your price, you will buy at the price you enter in the buy order. The seller will receive what you paid, which could be more than the price on the sell order. I accidentally do this occasionally when I am updating region-wide orders if I forget to buy out the cheap sell orders first.
As for the OP, I am inclined to agree with the people who have guessed that there might have been a filter on his orders display or that it was not sorted by price (perhaps by distance). Other than those reasons, he might have simply gotten lucky.

I once sold a handful of Tritanium for roughly 500M. I checked out the buyer and it was a less than two weeks old newbie corper. Someone had put up a sell order in my station with 99,999 ISK per units or something as the only order. I later put my Trit up reasonably priced (in fact didn't even notice the idiot sell order), but it sold the units for the inflated price. So the newbie was buying my trit in the station at the high price.
Due to the buyer being a newbie this all smelled of ISK laundering and so I petitioned it, and sadly the ISK vanished a few days later as being from a farmer.
So check out the buyer to avoid being classed as an ISK buyer. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images.
