I think it would be great if we had the ability to get in formations with other ships. It would make battles far less chaotic.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 30/03/2008 20:41:05 Considering that projectiles and missiles just pass through any solid object between them and their target, there's no reason for formations. Once we have tactical environments that will change though. But what stops people from juts manually getting into a formation now? I mean it's unnecessary and in the middle of a fleet battle you're too lagged to care, but still. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |

The only formations you can get in at the moment are a conga line or a blob.
Having 2 corp members forming on my wing in interceptors would be very awesome.

Didn't this used to be a feature iirc? Then it was taken out because it was "bloody pointless", or possibly for some techy reason. It would be nice to see though, especially in same ship or same race fleets, which look awesome to begin with.
It'd be nice if we had a "match velocity" (speed and heading) option for targets, possibly as a replacement for 'keep at distance...'. It would make flying formations easy, as everyone could take static positions, then lock a designated lead ship and click 'match velocity', which would avoid the conga line effect where ships trying to do this with the keep distance option tend to swing in behind the lead ship. Plus you keep all the functionality of 'keep at distance', so those missioners as use it can't complain ^_^ ______________________________________ ~Newbing up the place since 6/12/2007~ |

Nothing's stopping you from flying in formation, you just want a computer to do it for you. ----

Actually a "warp in formation" option would be far more tactical. IE a fleet enters and exits a warp tunnel in unison, ive noticed when I do missions with friends its ussually the first ship that comes out of warp that gets the collective flack of the NPC's.

You can already warp simultenously. >.>
Align to something first, then gang warp there and poof! you're in a warp tunnel at the same time and can see each other as you warp. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |

No reason? Duh, obviously it would look cooler.
Fleets in formation look awesome in Sins of Solar Empire, for instance. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |

There have been a few discussions the past couple of years about fleet formations as a means to reduce lag.
The general idea is that a formation of ships would have group stats instead of individual stats, hence geometrically less calculations during a fight. Formations could be skill-based and on a squad or wing level.
Of course, how this would actually work in practice would remain to be seen.

I think there was a "Formation Flying" skill back in the ooooold old days. It was either under the Leadership category or Spaceship Command.

Formations would be cool to maximise range limited mods like webbers and neuts. Stray too close to a formation of neuting BS and *poof* no cap or you just got a 99.999999999% hit to velocity. A group of smartbombing BS that have thier formation range set to keep each other just out of the blast radius but still have overlapping areas of effect would also be very cool on gatecamps. I'm sure there are many more ways to use formations that my drunken arse can't think of atm.

It would also be incredibly stupid, slow you all down and make you all even more vulnerable.
If you want to see pretty things then fly around like this manually, formations are of absolutely no use in pvp other than for remote rep battleships.
Fleet battles are not chaotic unless you are crap at eve.
