He'd heard stories that, in the far distant past, truckers had been the lowest of the low - the people you wouldn't want to walk your dog, much less date your daughter. Never-the-less, these people filled a vital position in the economy, and that certainly had not changed.
Every day, Armand Celestin gets into his pod, and then his Iteron 3, the CIS Marie Celeste. He clears Docking/Orbit Control, and heads out into space. He checks the Contracts available to him, picking this one, turning down another. 25 jumps for only 300,000 ISK? Forget it.
A corp-mate needs some hauling in the system Armand has located his center of operations, so he goes to help. A peaceful couple of hours are spent moving ore this way and that.
Once the belt is empty, Armand goes to check for more open contracts. Still, nothing worth taking on. So, it's time to check the orders. Luckily, most have been filled, and the results need to be moved to a trade hub. This occupies the next hour of Armand Celestin's life, all the while cursing the aged and incredibly slow engines of his "mighty" industrial.
Hours later, and 20million isk richer, Celestin docks once more. He extracts himself from the pod, and goes to his small apartment inside his corporation's headquarters.
For a profession once considered only fit for dropouts and losers, trucking has come a long way. --- I swear by my life, and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine. -John Galt |

I've done some trucking in my time, and while I haven't ever run one of those big rigs, I know I've done enough hauling to feed entire constellations. It's not an easy life, but a life that makes the worlds go round.

It's kind of humbling to know that every time I move some ore from here to there, I make industry possible.
And you should try flying one of the "big rigs" one of these days...they're amazing ships. Slow as all hell but it's damn fun to land in some station and watch the non-pod pilots gaping at the shear amount of stuff coming out of the bays.

As a miner I do alot of space trucking myself. I find it very gratifying to know that I play a vital role in the galaxie. Without miners and space truckers the galaxies industry would grind to a halt. I also find it fun to boot.

Space trucker activities do not just effect industry, They also give us.... opportunistic pod pilots a chance of practicing our boarding routines!

I like to think of myself as a force of nature, when I'm moving freight - be it a humble hold full of pure pelletized tritanium or a load of lorentz fluid barrels. There are discrepancies in the market, buyers willing to pay more than sellers are asking. That gap, that margin, is my native environment. I move between it and grow fat on the fodder found therein. My actions are inevitable, it is not my face nor my person that performs these actions, but my aspect as part of the whole. I am the market correcting itself.
I am the Invisible Hand.
It's humbling, and peaceful. I wonder, sometimes, if this isn't what Siddhartha was talking about. -Guillome Renard, ACCS

Interesting point, but I find it somewhat difficult to relate the two, considering one of the fundaments of Siddartha's existence was a dedication to absolute material poverty and asceticism. As pod pilots, we can't exactly claim to possess such adherences. I'm probably being too literal. But I do see what you're getting at.

To my understanding, the Buddha Sidharta began rather wealthy. But, failing to find happiness in riches, gave everythign away and traveled as a monk, poor to the point of starvation. But again, he did not find happiness or enlightenment. It was in the Middle Path that he believed Nirvana to be reached. Not riches, but neither in utter poverty. Personally I think that while a great man, he was mistaken unto the nature of existance, and thus his more advanced teaching were flawed, but that's a topic to be explored elsewhere.
For the orginal topic, I fully agree that those who transport materials to those in need are a cornerstone of civilization.

Er... yes. What he said.
It's been a good long time since I've read up on Buddhist doctrine, my apologies.

Space trucking's good. Someone has to carry stuff around space. Anyway, there ain't any ship more beautiful than a prowler (or, maybe a proratur..) |

Ore's my favorite thing to transport. Trade goods and items are nice, but when you shift ore/minerals around space...you know it's going towards something. Plus, after half an hour of hauling, seeing the wallet flash, and flash and flash some more...excellence.
And no, I'm not divulging my secrets. *winks*

Taking along goods in that extra bit of unused cargo space is always just positive. The extra ISK never hurts.

Dont forget that you are not alone out there. I myself have done my share of transportation. Nowadays I'm mining in my trusty barge. And you're absolutly right in that it feels nice to know you are providing the basic requirements for industry (ore and minerals). Of course i still do the odd transport mission. |
