I failed my first mission: Damsel in Distress Level 2 My agent was not happy, as this poor girl has to now spend her life in prostitution. He deducted 0.3 from my standings
I accepted the mission even though it was in low-sec, but as its surrounded by hi-sec systems it is not normally used for pirating and no ships had been destroyed in 24 hours. There's normally around 4 pilots in local and I did check their standings before starting the mission.
I tried to use my Rifter with the following fittings:
Shield Power Relay x 3
Medium Shield Extender Heat Dissipation Amplifier Cold-Gas Arcjet Thrusters
3x 200mm light 'Scout' Autocannon
Rig: Projectile Collision Accelerator.
The mission was going ok, until I attacked Kruul. Then 10x Mercenary Elite Fighters showed up. As I had to get to a 700m orbit, I was taking too much damage, before I could use my guns. I had to warp out and only managed to destroy one fighter. I tried fitting another shield resistance module, but this slowed me down and I still had to warp out with 100% of my shields gone. So I tried fitting a small armor repairer, so I could repair armor, as the local station had no repair facilities. But this delayed the point when I would warp out and I ended up escaping with 50% structure gone :(
I decided that I would not be able to complete the mission as I would keep having to warp out to my safespot for repairs. Also being in low-sec was making it more complicated by having to keep an eye on local. The reward was only 150k, so I thought it was not worth it. The main problem here, was all the fighters attacked at once! and I was at close range.
Is there anything better that I could have done? Before I accept anymore level 2 missions, is the Rifter upto the job, could I fit it better. Or would I have to switch to a long range ship for some types of missions.
I am specialising in frigates and have not trained any medium weapons, even though i use a cruiser for mining. I should be trained to use assault ships and Interceptors in few days, will these be ok for Level 2 combat missions?

Tricky little mission..
Fortunately by the time I started grinding Lv.2 missions I was zipping about in a Jaguar (Rifter A.F.). I chose the Jag over the Wolf for the speed + 4 mid-slots (Wolf only has 2). I equipped ColdGas AB, Shield Booster, & Cap Rechargers II x2, to keep cap alive. Running the shield booster permanently allowed me to tank through the 2nd wave of elite frigs.
Using a Rifter.. maybe try with a Shield Booster (C5-L!!) and either Cap Recharger II, or Cap Booster with a stack of batteries! Also, with Rifter, I fitted dual Arbalest Missile launchers which gave me adequate punch with small arti's to take out Frigs from better range.
Despite popular dislike of AFs, I like their resistances and think theyre good fun, especially Wolf + Jaguar. If you cert a Cruiser for range and speed-Kiting, you'll have no trouble though --------------------------- **Insert Pirate-themed remark** |

Thanks for your comments. The main problem with the passive shield tank, is it uses all my low and mid modules! So switching to an active tank, may be better. I like the challenge of using a frigate as much as possible. I realise that a cruiser will make these missions far easier. But I'm aiming to be in a stealth-bomber by July and I know as soon as I switch to a cruiser for combat, it will delay when I can fly a stealth bomber as I will have to train medium weapons and cruiser skills. I like the idea of using a Jaguar for level 2 missions or I could use an Ishkur and drones, as I will soon have Gallente and Minmater frigate V.

This mission could work with a long range destroyer.
As it is not a deadspace, you can warp away from the ennemies and try to keep range the best tou can while you kill them.
If you are specialized in frigate equipement (guns & speed mostly), the destroyer should work great, even with low destroyer skill (I have still only destroyers at 3 and runned many many level 2 missions with only level 1 or 2 in destroyers).
So, I think the destroyer would have made a difference in efficiently killing kruul's friends while they were out of range.
The damsel in distress is a difficult mission, mercenaries are tricky because they have some of the fastest and most powerful frigates and cruisers.
One last thing : finding a corp with mission runners inside would avoid you failing missions as they could come and help you or you could run missions in group (a pack of newbies can do great things, and even if I could solo all lvl 4, I like having a wingman and sharing experience with them). -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Even though the Rifter is at its best in PvP when sporting autocannons, in PvE you'll have a much easier time if you fit a long range sniper build, which for the Rifter means artys. Replace your autocannons with 250mm's and use your speed to stay out of range of most rats. Many rats use devastating close range weapons so by keeping your distance and blowing them up from afar you greatly reduce their damage potential. |

Awesome. The Ishkur is a great ship! Do you have solid drone skills? As it has space for 3 light drones its best to have these techII as soon as possible. On top of that Drone Interfacing, and a Drone Augmentation in the top slots will help your little minions rip apart Frigates like paper from a comfortable range.
I've always wanted to try Ishkur, but I'm sadly spec'd between Minmatar + Amarr vessels
I trained up to Battlecruiser before realising what I really wanted to do was downsize to hardcore Frigs. Having a clear idea of what you want to be piloting before you start scattering your learning time is a real plus. Kudos to you.
I'm happy enough in my Jag. Sure, AFs could do with a clearer defined roll, but they make for more exciting missioning than tanking through in a Cruiser, no argument! --------------------------- **Insert Pirate-themed remark** |

Ishkur can field 5 light drones and have some spare in dronebay. Drone link augmentor wont help you much, afaik rats dont orbit longer than 30km distance in lvl2 missions. Put some rails or nos in highs for bit more cap.
And in general if your not planning to do lvl2 missions all the life, but advance to lvl3 then lvl4 missions, you'll have to train cruiser anyway. |

This mission can be accomplished in an easier fashion as well. You are not required to kill anything, only to rescue the damsel. You can warp in, kill the pleasure hub, pick up the damsel from the cargo container, and split. If you can tank the damage for a few minutes, you don't have to shoot any ships. I don't think this works at higher mission levels for this mission, but the level 2 can be done without killing any npc's at all.

I loved the activ tank on my merlin + cap recharger, this will also keep your sig radius small. The save way would be to hop into an agile cruiser for lvl2.

Edited by: Hippy Dave on 01/04/2008 01:27:24 As ataupe said you dont need to kill anything, but tanking in a rifter while taking out the hub would be tricky to say the least.
This particular mission has an odd little trigger. You can kill every ship except Kruul as soon as you target him (or use a module on him i forget which) he calls for backup and the mercs arrive. However if you take out all the kruul guards and then take out the pleasure hub (shouldnt be to hard tanking kruul on his own) you can now kill kruul and he wont call in the mercs (weird but true) ...problem solved

Thanks for the good advice. It was easy to take out Kruul's henchmen, and Kruul's cruiser did not do much damage to the Rifter. So I hadn't tried to destroy the pleasure hub first. So if I get this mission again, I will try it. Thanks!!

Another option to make this one almost too easy:
1. Warp in at the 100km range and wait until the baddies come to get you 2. Warp out to anywhere when they get too close for your nerves 3. Warp back in at 0km and get the poor little wench out without needing to tank...
The bad dudes will probably be some 60-70km away when you go back in and if you can't blow up the structure in the amount of time it takes them to get back then you really need bigger f#<&ing guns!)
