Originally by: Siigari Kitawa I've been reading through a ton of threads lately and there are some things that I have been seeing that are driving me nuts. This is not a thread about "kill the trolls!" or "moar whines!" but actually about using good forum etiquette so others may easily enjoy the forums without having to go through your drivel.
1) DO NOT QUOTE THE FIRST POST IN A THREAD. EVER. This is soooo visually annoying and especially when the first reply in the thread quotes the first post. We have no reason to need to scroll the extra quarter mile just so we can see that you know how to use the quote button. The first post is the root like a directory structure. Every reply after the OP's reply is directed back at the first post generally. If a reply is quoted, that means the reply is NOT to the first post but to somebody else who has replied to the original post. Please do not quote the first post in a thread in its entirety.
2) USE PARAGRAPHS. Nobody likes reading walloftext. It is visually painful and causes eyestrain, not to mention tracking long paragraphs can become not only physically difficult, but mentally exhausting. Using line breaks and proper paragraphs gives the reader a moment to digest what you have just said before they move on to the next paragraph. Organize paragraphs into neat thoughts and write them like a book and not just one very long thought. Even if a paragraph is only one sentence, it can make or break the readability of your post by keeping thoughts and ideas broken down into individual paragraphs.
3) TRY NOT TO QUOTE AN ENTIRE POST IN A REPLY. If you are trying to reply to somebody's idea or thought in a particular post, trim the quote accordingly so the person reading through the thread may read the replies to posters and see what exactly what topic/subject the reply is speaking about. If you have a gigantic post and somebody quotes the entire thing, it causes readers to sometimes have to read the entire quote just to get the information out to read the reply.
4) LINK URLS FOR OTHERS. Unfortunately for us, CCP's forums do not auto-parse links, so we must do it manually. To do it, select the area of text you wish to link (the text can be the URL itself), copy the text and then click the little blue button with a chain link. If you just want to link the URL text as the link itself, just paste the text in the box (example: http://www.siigarikitawa.com) If you wish to have it be "pretty" such as EVE Comic Express then select the text you wish to hyperlink, click the blue box with the chain link and type in your URL address. Congrats! You can link now!
5) DO NOT CORRECT OTHER PEOPLE'S SPELLING AND/OR GRAMMAR. While others may not have the grammar or spelling prowess that you have, correcting other's spelling and grammar is not acceptable on the internet. There are certain situations where a sentence may be incomprehensible and you will need to ask questions to figure out what a person is saying, but if you see "alot" or "their" instead of "they're," don't correct them. While it can be funny to do occasionally it just wastes posts and causes for more scroll time. If it's really bad, feel free, but don't bandwagon post.
6) KNOW HOW AND WHEN TO USE BOLD, ITALICS AND UNDERLINE. Use bold text to draw attention to important words and ideas. Italic text is used in a similar fashion, but realize italic text is often difficult to read, and it makes more sense to draw attention to a point or idea with bold text. Finally, underlined text should really not ever be used as hyperlinks are traditionally underlined, and this may cause confusion.
7) DON'T QUOTE AND REPLY WITH "this". If you have a similar thought to somebody's post, reply with your own input, instead of ge

Your rules of 'etiquette' are an analog of imposing a WoW ruleset in-game.

I don't kow if I revel in it but I agree with you. Eve forums perhaps best iconify the IG experience. Most games, it's a vocal minority and that's true here too and that might amount to a well represented group or not.
I've noticed that pirates are some of the biggest forum *****s there are. ------------

ah! the internet. a new frontier of social discourse. where men are men, women are men, children are pretending to be men and pretty much everything is taken far far too seriously.
the forum is, of course, just a bunch of words stored on a server somewhere. but clearly the whole thing will fall apart if we do not embolden appropriately.

Who are you to decide what is (un)acceptable on the internet? Especially since what you're saying is that something that is done outside of the internet, and is a part of the basic education system all over the world, does not apply on the internet?
I hate spelling errors myself, but I don't bother with correcting people's online spelling errors myself. Instead, I'm content with knowing that the misspelling person is lazy and/or stupid. Nationality is irrelevant when it comes to spelling, and says so much about the person behind it. Grammar, on the other hand, is a different matter, and I'm far more lenient towards bad grammar, short of the basics such as punctuation and paragraphs.
You want forum behavior that should be considered unacceptable?
# People that quote other people's posts (in whole or part) and alter the text somehow to change it's meaning and/or context, and then reply to the new text simply with the phrase "Fixed it for you". How more childish can you get? Oh wait...
# People that reply with a "FIRST!" post, like posting on a forum is a race.
# People that only post with "tl:dr". If you had time to post, you had time to read.
# People that post "Can I have your stuff?". Needs no explanation.
Finally, I will underline whatever text I desire, regardless of whether it may cause confusion due to the tendency of hyperlinks to be underlined. If anyone tried to click the previous sentence, then they're either colourblind or morons, and definetely lazy. |
