I haven't been able to find any guides on this particular mission. I struggled like hell on it earlier and eventually had to give up because I was just being melted in no time by the build up of hostiles.
Any ideas on how to take that gate down quickly enough so you don't get Fubar'd?

I had friend help me with this one I wouldn't even waste time on gate tell all ships are dead the waves when I did it where about 5 mins apart. My first attempted I warped out on second wave and was only gone for few mins and when I came back everything had spawned. The gate took me like 5 full sets of 24x6 cruise missiles.

This is considered the most difficult lvl 4 mission because of the massive amounts of different damage types you need to tank.
It's best to kill off each spawn as quickly as possible and worry about destroying the stargate until everything is destroyed. If you try and focus on the gate, multiple spawns will end up making you run. I've found it easiest to bring a friend to clear the spawns quickly, but if that isn't an option, I would do the following:
Warp in an immediately head away from the stargate, focusing on the cruiser sized ships first and then the BS. After you have cleared the first wave you will have a bit of time before the second wave appears.
The main issue are the Darkana battleships in this mission. You need to use explosive damage against them as anything else will take forever. If you're flying a raven for this mission, fit an omni tank (1xinvuln, 1xthermal, 1xballistic, 1xphoton), and just keep your range from the targets. If you get too close the darkanas will melt your tank, but I find if I get around 65-70km away I can tank each spawn easily. Focus on getting rid of each of the darkana BS in each wave first, then get the support/other BS.
There is a total of 5 spawns after the initial spawn you warp in on at the beginning of the mission. If you can manage to destroy each spawn before the next arrives the mission isn't that difficult. I've used a passive nighthawk to do this mission as well as a raven and it works, but you still need to keep at range from the Darkana or your tank will melt.
Finally, this mission is very much worth it to loot/salvage. Infact I recommend doing all 4 of the combat missions in the EA group, as with tags included you should make anywhere from 130 - 160 million. Good luck with the mission.

I did that in a Rattlesnake solo , but it was faction fit .
I found that if i kept moving , full-speed and use my 'orbit at' in Overview , i could tank them all and take them out one-by-one . ( no drones )
I cleared the entire room , then popped the gate .
The hard thing with this room is ... it is on a timer for each additional wave to warp in .
So if you cannot take out enough , fast enough , they overwhelm you .
And yes , you must find the best balance of an Omni-tank to do this room solo .
G/L !

Thanks to everyone who had replied. There's nothing about this mission on Eve-Wiki, and I couldn't see anything on any of the others in the links in this forum.
I shall bear your hints in mind for future reference.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but all in there are only 5 waves total? Ok that makes sense then to leave the gate. I tried this with a Raven (with a bad tank setup I think, certainly the wrong one for the Enemies) and a Maelstrom, together, but after a while of bad target selection I was getting shields melted in no time. I so need to get rigs on my Raven.
