Hey all. anyone here use FRAPS ? If so is there anything you wish it could do that it doesn't at the moment?
Or to put it another way...what would you like to do with your game videos that you can't do at the moment?

Yup, pretty much everyone here uses fraps for the video making. And I can't really think of anything that it completely requires anymore, it does what it sets out to do and does it well.

To be able to record the DirectX data, in real time, and then using the "eve.exe" as a generator, be able to manipulate the data inside a graphics suite, and then export this into an AVI file in any resolution and any frame rate.
So basically, a battle recorder for EVE, plus a program to edit the camera angles and playback.
That's what I want.

This. I didn't realise we were talking about outside the fraps era. But yus, dear god this would be such a good addition to eve. I'm still convinced it could be done with a data miner, but this would either be picked up by ccp for (rightly) invading their program, or if they allowed it, would allow several loopholes to form for more unethical dataminers.
There are of course programmes that can capture the 3d data from directx applications, but they only work as 3d snapshots rather than animations, which makes me sad :(

I use a very fast sketch artist, whose work I later compile into a flipbook, which I then scan page by page. He's quite good.

I`ve tried other recording software in the past, but none came close to Fraps when it comes to ease of use. The only downside for me at the time was that I was limited to the famous half-size recording because of a single CPU core.
The downside of the other tools is that some of them need to "lock" an application first (so you have to specify which .exe you want to record), that they do not recognize the eve-executable as something recordable (no compatibility with dx9?) or that they slow down your system alot more then Fraps does.
I haven`t found a replacement (yet), but I`ve stopped looking since Fraps works just fine for me now. ---

Edited by: Yukiko Kanezaki on 02/04/2008 02:10:19 Isn't there a way to record with a TV card? Like output to a second computer, and use a TV card to record it?
The bonus to doing it this way, was you wouldn't lose any FPS on your main gaming computer. (edit: Supposedly. I knew someone who said he did it this way (or something like it) in planetside, so he could record fights without impacting the gameplay)

I've done it before but most tv cards don't support the same kind of resolutions as FRAPS. It does work but it's not ideal.

FRAPS, as most simple to use. The only drawback I expirienced is that FRAPS stupidly refuses to work capture video correctly on notebooks with 17" matrix (enforcing the standart display resolution, which actually blurrs out damn everything). It's still could be avoided if you switch your matrix resolution from 1600x1200 to standarts 1280Xwhatever. When the FRAPS dev team will resolve that problem - FRAPS will be the ultimate tool of all times.
