Edited by: Chaosgabe TWC on 01/04/2008 10:21:41 I really hope that it wont be another WoW clone. There are way too many of this kind already, and it looks like there will be more and more (Warhammer Fantasy anyone? :/)
I¦d prefer PlanetSideish gameplay with lots of shooting and plenty of ppl to shoot at. :D If its gonna be another level/class - based grindfest i wont even consider looking at the trial.

Necromunda ftw!
Its strange, i remember way more stuff from Necromunda fights than from my WH40k ones. Like the one time, when i hit this guy on top of a building with a shotgun. :D He fell 3 stories, and got a serious wound from that. ^^

the necromunda fights were always much more memorable, but unfortunately i can almost predict the marine "paladins" the eldaR "wizards" etc
tbh if they based it off necromunda it would pwn all, it could have a few WOW style dungeons but if it was mainly brutal PVP advancement like the game with the gangs correctly represented it would probably replace my eve.

It seperates the men from the boys.
As for a Warhammer 40k MMORPG...I don't have high hopes. Unless the dev team are like CCP in that they aren't afraid to try new things instead of creating the 100th Everquest/WoW clone then it is going to suck immensely.

Bearing in mind that Necromunda and WH40k are set in the same universe, and that this isn't anything to do with large-scale army strategy, this IS basically a Necromunda game. They're just sticking with the better known brand name as a marketing thing.
I'm still intrigued to see how they're going to handle balancing. 1 x Imperial Guardsman should not ever ever ever = 1 x Spacemarine. My big fear is that they'll just "balance" it anyway and you will have seriously underpowered Spacemarines / seriously overpowered Orks, etc.
Personally, I'd love to see them use "pets" to balance it, in the form of squad mates. Instead of playing as 1 individual Guardsman, you play as a squad leader with a whole team to command. Spacemarines, thusly, can be balanced by simply having less squadmates at a given level than one of the swarm teams.
Of course that'd only ork if it was RPG style, so it'd be out if it really is going to be a Tabula Rasa style shooter... ------

I guarantee that this is what is going to happen:
- They're gonna bastardise the story. The Imperium of Man, the Eldar and the Tau are going to be on one side, with the other factions on the opposing side.
- The Eldar are a species that are on the brink of extinction, but since they are more or less elves, and since most MMORPG fantasy tards love to play as elves, the entire game will be crammed full of Eldar players.
- Quests will provide players with exciting new challenges, and a chance to be part of the story with quests such as "I was about to wipe out a planet that we suspect to have been tainted by Chaos...but then I lost the detonator. Please find it...over there by those low level rabbits".
- Cities in W40k will be full of astartes and Eldar shouting "GIEF MONEY PLEAZ LULZ".

I can actually see the thing with the eldar happening Although its not a fantasy thing... the highest number of players in eve are caldari no? caldari are the smallest race.. might just be an mmo thing. Hopefully its as fun as DoW, but i do doubt it.

They need to balance the races by making them act how they do in the 40k universe, for example a space marine lives a monotheistic life and is either in battle or training or carrying out his theological duties and doesn't own many personal possessions and would rarely if ever be running around a city dancing in bars, less people would then choose to be a marine but if you want to be the uber race you have to pay the price of that races life style. ========================================= A Man chooses, a slave obeys. |

they had a half arsed stab at that in WoW. for example druids having to mince off to druid-land to 'find themselves' in the MMORPG equivilent of a gap year sticking katamine up your arse in Goa.
and in warhammer40k online to accurately reflect the relative numbers, on each server you'd need approximately five eldar or space marine players, with everybody else playing imperial guard. i like the imperial guard (and the orks, for that matter) so i'm down with that, but i'd imagine there would be some pretty disappointed children if they had character quotas.
besides - we all know everbody just plays whatever the best character/race combination are at the time anyway.

you'll probably start off as a lowly new recruit for each race, and 'earn' your space marine power armour, eldar aspect warrior gear or whatever over time.
i hope the 40k MMO is awesome, but i'm not holding out much hope. approximately 1-in-5 GW licenses are any good. and by that i mean DoW and spacehulk.
with DoW2 on the horizon the 40k MMO will probably have to be crap just to maintain the balance, lest the forces of chaos be unleased by mistake.

Edited by: ry ry on 03/04/2008 11:50:26 hmm. thinking about this, what would be double awesome is if you didn't choose chaos as a character creation option, but as a career path of sorts.
for ex. you could have years of loyal service as an imperial commissar, only to fall to chaos after watching the space marines gun down your regiment as they attempted to retreat to higher ground and avoid being slaughtered by an advancing chaos horde.

The advancement method started as the lowest in each race and moving up sounds good!
Thinking about it though, some of the units in (DoW at least, as other than a year of playing when i was 10, thats where my experience is from) 40k are generically male or female, so how would that work? Female space marines?

I.P. does not a good game make.
In fact, from my experience following the development of games, you can boil it down to the original idea and use it to predict the outcome.
Idea: "Let's make a Warhammer 40k MMO!" = Failure
Idea: "Let's make a kick-ass MMO. We'll need some I.P. though. Make our own or license?" = Possibly Awesome ------------------------------------------------ Disclaimer: This is a meta-game alt for meta-game discussions. |

So me and my buddy were thinking about this and heres what we would hope happen.
Space marines and necrons pay balance uberness by basically no acquiring gear, they can maybe become terminators / sergeants / heavy weapons or wraiths / pariahs / immortals but never really get new gear, maybe bolter and power armor upgrades like mk1-8 or whatever. Purity seals might work as kinda "im a badass"
space marines sisters of the battle, imperial guard on one side
Chaos space marines and lost and the damned on another
As for chaos marines if they use any weapon to long spend time in the eye of terror ect they get mutations at random some good some bad, Random as well to reflect the whims of their gods.
Tau on another side
necrons on another
Eldar on another
Tyranids on another
Dark eldar last I heard the redoing the who race so who knows maybe with eldar?
To balance out you know Imperial forces having so many allies and to a lesser extent chaos i would like to see a system like this.
Like the map in eve each side holds its own pocket of space (like they do) with necrons having worlds almost at random.
The larger sides take longer to travel, each planet on the map represents a battlefield . so eldar tau tyranids and necrons can get to a fight faster (imagine liek a few minute "travel time" imperial and chaos a bit longer. Each world is conquerable except each races home planet or crone world ect. This would open up a lot of room for inside empire trade and bearing but if their on the wrong planet at he wrong time is pvp time.
Just my random ramblings.

I love 40k, but I hate the computer games from that franchise. I think THQ will fail in my eyes, for my 40k is far to brutal for a broad market, as WH-AOR will fail for me, bcause it has NOTHING to do with the WFRPG I love so much and I play still to my seasoned age of 32.

I'm looking forward to this but I KNOW I'm going to be dissapointed.. I know i'm not going to able to be an Iron Warrior. It's probably going to be something like Chaos : Khorne Berzerker, Imperium : Ultramarines. Something crappy and simple like that. Speaking of Iron Warriors.. I wonder how vehicles will be implemented? Vehicles are pretty damn important in 40K so it'd be odd to ignore them all together. That settles it, now I've REALLY set myself up for disappointment because I want to be play a Paranoid Traitor Marine driving a Defiler ;p

The same things that exist in every story. There could be players who build or operate the ships needed to transport troops, mechanics to build and fix structures and vehicles. If you were a space marine you could choose to become an apothecary and heal rather than kill. There's lots of things.
Warhammer 40k is about the clashing between countless civilisations, so there's always room for builders, traders, mercs and healers.

i hope the 40k MMO is awesome, but i'm not holding out much hope. approximately 1-in-5 GW licenses are any good. and by that i mean DoW and spacehulk.
with DoW2 on the horizon the 40k MMO will probably have to be crap just to maintain the balance, lest the forces of chaos be unleased by mistake.

Originally by: Sereifex Daku There could be players who build or operate the ships needed to transport troops, mechanics to build and fix structures and vehicles. If you were a space marine you could choose to become an apothecary and heal rather than kill. There's lots of things. Warhammer 40k is about the clashing between countless civilisations, so there's always room for builders, traders, mercs and healers.
far as I remember, almost everyone that was a builder type in the Imperium at least had all sorts of tubes and junk sticking out of them. Servitors sure aren't pretty. Techmarines also have a wierd look, what with all those servoarms and stuff.
I just don't find that appealing.

Those things were pretty brutal in Necromunda. I liked my grenade launcher though. Nothing like firing huge clouds of hallucinogens everywhere.

I think the logic is "if I can build lots of cool things that no-body else can, why not replace some of my meaty bits?".
My big worry about the game, thinking more bout the individual characters, is a massive weeaboo Tau population. I like the Tau. I don't want to have to be subjected to 1000's of players named after Gundam characters... ------

Oh god! That hadn't occured to me. What's worse is that the Tau will msot probably be the snipers of the game, most likely doubling the chance that the Tau will be the most common race in the MMO.

Bad news concerning the 40k MMO. (At least from my pov :/) Linky No fps, gameplay. Looks like they are going the way of the Clones . . .

Oh gods it's true! They'll be everywhere.. there'll be thousands of them...thousands of Running, crouching, camping snipers..
That's it, the game is cancelled, sorry.
