Originally by: Elden VanVoiden Precisely, see at this point in time I am paying for a game that I cannot play when I am available to play it...... Therefore I may have to stop paying for it..... Question for you CCP, if existing customers are considering stopping paying you for a service, how many do you think never pay in the first place because of these issues.... Consider: Person A: "ooh theres this great space game, you should play" Person B: "Cool I'll try it in my lunch break tomorrow" Person A: "Erm, well you see, its not available when you are at lunch" WTH???
No YOU CANNOT have my stuff!
Ah, the old "Do what I say or I'll cancel my 72 accounts and my 352 friends won't sub".
You make it sound as if 11:00-12:00 GMT is the ONLY time you can play. Which I don't believe. Show your friends some screenshots to give them an idea of the look of the game, and explain how to get a 21-day free trial through Steam. If they can't install a free client at home, then how are they going to play anyway?
No matter what time DT is, people will complain. So CCP time it to suit themselves. Consider the poor aussies - DT happens right in the middle of the evening for them.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

Now that downtime have moved an hour forward for those affected by daylight savings, there will probably be a spike in subscriptions. But CCP knows people are too addicted for the subscription numbers to fall much.
The real question is: Is the downtime necessary? why is there a downtime at all? Everybody touts that servers needs maintenance, but anyone who knows anything about servers knows that 23/7 is pretty unacceptable for global businesses. I'm willing to bet 50m isk that if CCP told us the truth about what goes on behind the curtains, most rational people would be quite disappointed. In all likeliness, eve is probably terribly unstable, and for also unknown factors they're unable to fix it and have been putting their money elsewhere. Any takers?
What is also interesting to note, is that, now with the Asian server, downtime for UK server has not moved to an earlier spot - during US night/EU mornings. Summertime is generally bad for EU eve players. It has moved an hour forward for iceland/UK devs as well. It would make sense for it to at least move to 11:00 GMT or the devs now have to work the DT an hour later.
Is 12:00 GMT in reality chosen to benefit chinese farmers?
That last one was a pun.

Eve Time is based on UTC, and as such is not subject to daylight saving time. I think I recall there being a way of changing the hour on the EVE clock, though keep in mind that most players use EVE time as reference for scheduling.

Yeah, I'm sure CCP just decided arbitrarily to have a downtime, probably so they could use it as a Quake server and get an hour of FPS time in.
While CCP has not told us what they do at downtime I think it is safe to say they have good reasons for it. In my time in EVE I have rarely seen it crash during the day (nodes go here and there and it has happened occasionally but not often). When I played WoW their servers would go wonky much more frequently. Better to be proactive on a schedule to maintain the systems then just see how long they can run before going foom.
Additionally perhaps some things like seeding asteroid belts and exploration sites and so on can only occur during DT (not to mention market orders). I do not know really and I would hope a lot of that could happen while the game is running but this may also be a reason.
And it could also be that most days nothing happens during downtime and CCP put it in place so players got used to it and they could use that time *if* they needed it for a hotfix or other maintenance that invariably creeps up on any system this complex. They also then control when this happens rather than getting a call at 2am dragging them away from the pub because the servers crashed.
Finally consider that EVE is one shard. In WoW a given server may go down but most of the players are not affected (being on other servers). In EVE it is all or nothing so better to be on top of things to ensure smooth running as much as possible and a scheduled DT helps achieve that.
Or they just hate you and want to mess with your gaming experience as much as possible.

What trust? Just common sense. They have had DT since Day #1. You think when they developed the game they just said, "Hey! Let's put in an hour long downtime each day! We can advertise it on the box as a game feature!" (Yes EVE once upon a time had a box)
I think it is safe to say they had legitimate reasons for deciding to do it this way.

Edited for you.. GMT is a virtual clock, and never changes. BST does know daytime-saving etc. Game runs on GMT, not on BST.
And yes, I'd like to see the game use daytime-saving times, it hurts my lunch hour too :P

And to hop on the "get over it" train I'll add the reason the devs always give when this question is asked.
The downtime is at 11:00 because this is the time when most relevant employees at CCP are around in case something needs to be fixed quickly. It's as easy as that...

It's not even always a full hour, come to that. Occasionally it's more, but much more often it's less.

Mate, that's exactly what blind trust is. I don't doubt for a second there is a good reason why. But the reason why is in all likeliness very disappointing. Probably why all we've ever been told in all these years is an ambiguous "maintenance". And this I find even more disappointing than the reason.
I will admit that I could be wrong. But if you don't understand the concern, then it probably doesn't concern you.
And yeah I own the box... and a christmas card written by, I believe, Pan from christmas 2002. You know, like, 5 months prior to the release.

Also it's the only time of the day when no one seems to want to play. Just look at the user connections graphs.
