....complete with back stories and just enought tension to suggest that all-out war is 3 degrees away. And yet there's nothing really in the game that would encourage playing your character true to your race. Yeah yeah, there's almost daily fluffy articles and eve cronicles (which I love btw) but no context in game. The border areas are boring and you aren't even allowed to join an race specific npc corp to improve your standings. Here's a couple of ideas that might go a long way to making the race back story a little more viable and adding some interesting game play.
1. Make border system security fluctuate based on the political situation between races. example: if the ingame news talks about tension between this state and that, have a border system drop from .8 to .4 and watch the fur fly.
2. Make border system security selective. Compounding on the above idea, make it so that it's not a free-for-all but specific between players of certain races. Let's pretend Ammar and Mimatar are at it again and tensions are running high. Make it so that only between these two races that security levels drop.
3. SO I'm in some Ammar area and I pop a few and have my security level lowered by concord. Allow my security level to only be lowered in Ammar space but untouched in other areas.
3. Allow themed corps in support of racial objectives.
Anyway these are just random thoughts that may be hard to implement but the bottom line is I'm a little dissapointed that Eve is just a every-capsuler-for-himself free4all and that there's not encouragement to role play or support the teams for those of us who love role-play.
And just why has not CCP produced a role-playing side project? duh?

Rp will mean nothing in this game and CCP will only support RP by way of fluff puff art books and trading cards.
If you watch the ambulation video from fanfest you hear the dev describe the RP situation, effectively he says you're RPing by virtue of playing the game however you choose to. Put another way this means we're not adding an explicit gameplay mechanic, if you want it, figure something out amongst yourselves. In fact I'm RPing a contrarian and landed estate owner right now!
Factional warfare will be biggest anticlimax in Eve expansion history--"Hey guys lets invent a rich role playing from the cloth when everyone knows there is no backstory and most of 0.0 is underutilized and terrible!" The most profound RP decision of the year will be the release of 6 sixth amarrian frigate, ironically, a reskin of the event-reward Magnate.

have you heard of something called "factional warfare"?

Factions have their own standings already. CONCORD sets security status of the system based on ability to enforce its' will, not on diplomatic issues. Remember, CONCORD only responds to PvP for a good RP reason: They are only allowed to act on capsuleer actions against other capsuleers. That's why they don't respond to us killing Navy ships, or random other things that are not players or owned by players.
NPC corps that allow you to join them might be interesting, but only if done properly to help the faction, and not for "phat lewts."
Everything else is fine, and regardless of sabre-rattling by the factions, they are bound by treaties, and allowing people to shoot each other willy-nilly will just make no sense, and end badly.
