I was reading the thread about why people hate goons and read about both goons and bob having extreme philosophies. Could someone please tell me what these philosophies are? It seemed that people complain about BoB but I don't see specific reasons like I do with goons. -- It may be that the old astrologers had the truth exactly reversed, when they believed that the stars controlled the destinies of men. The time may come when men control the destinies of stars. ACC |

It's pretty funny actually. Near as I can tell by reading all the crap being spewed, BoB are stereotypical "pr0" gamers complete with the laughable elitism and ego inflation that comes with that territory; goons on the other hand are stereotypical pubescent net clowns who love to antagonize people who take the internet (in this case gaming) seriously.
I would say it's like the cobra vs mongoose scenario but I think that would be giving all parties involved way too much credit, so instead I'll just describe it as a marriage made in videogame hell. Both groups are hardwired to yank eachothers' respective chain.

*edit* No, I know where I've seen this before: it's a rehash of jocks vs dorks from some bad 80s teen comedy with the exception that nobody will be getting laid over it.

Philosophy...
LOL
...... being a collective of griefing limp phalli (goons) or elitest limp phalli (bobs) does not a philosophy make, they come to EVE cos Iceland has this where bob and goons can get defined side by side
but then all i've said is hearsay derived from the pages of the forum.

It's always interesting to hear what people's perceptions are from the outside.
Like most things, people develop a rough monolithic caricature of these groups and try to stuff thousands of people into these generalizations.
BoB are a lot more Goonie than people give use credit for, and Goons are a lot more serious and BoB-like than people assume. Most players on both sides are just your average gamer-types who log on for an unhealthy amount of time per week to play internet shooty-shooty and then log off and spend time with their families and friends.
BoB does tend to be made up of high skill point players who have been around Eve for a long time. Many of our members have been leaders of other corporations and moved to BoB to not have to put up with the hassles of leadership anymore.
A lot of the guys who were responsible for the "we're the best, f'u" attitude have left the Alliance, and left it a long time ago. Believe me, I'm not saying that there aren't dolts and asshats. BoB's a cross section of every single other group in the game, we just have more skillpoints per capita.
BoB was one of the first groups to figure-out POS mechanics and how moon mining could make Alliances rich...so they got rich. Two of the key corps in BoB are communist, and were at a time when people would say, "being communist in Eve is impossible without cheating." They had a system, put it in place, and used people's skills in an efficient and cooperative way.
BoB was one of the first Alliances who spent time to try to figure-out optimal ship set-ups and one of the best guys in the game at figuring-out optimal set-ups and getting the best out of ships is TWD, and is a long-time member of the Alliance.
Goons come from the Something Awful forum community -- primarily. If you spend any time there, that will explain their philosophy. The name "goon" comes from that community.
Goons at SA would go around "invading" new MMPOLGs and various forums and try to grief people, with the idea of making their gameplay experience as miserable as possible. This isn't a criticism, most Goons will gleefully embrace their heritage. Goons in Eve now have moved beyond that.
Most Goons who have stuck with the game this long are pretty serious about it and put in the time and are trying to be very serious-business internet space ship guys. Goons right now are trying to deal with this very identity issue, as they feel the pressure from guys who just want to log on, suicide 10 frigates into a battleship gang and log off. And the guys who actually want to play the game and be successful at it.
There are cultural differences between the two groups. But in the grand scheme of things, not that much is really different. Forums are more important to Goons (not surprising coming from SA). Skillpoints and optimization of assets are more important to BoB (not surprising seeing as they've been badly outnumbered for so long).
Once you get past the rhetoric (and GAWD! there's a lot of rhetoric), there's really not much difference. We're all just MMO-gamers who have chosen this game as our primary hobby.

Making fun of of dead people is not ethetical, I am sure there are some bobs who have upset goons, not sure if any of those are real life related.
All in all, Its been fun fighting them, and looking forward for more goons to get rich and afford good ships. Maybe one day local chatter would be prohibited from their leader, and there won't be so much real life hate over a game.

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 06/04/2008 17:02:23 Onchas is wrong, we are actually quite elitist.
That's got nothign to do with having more skillpoints. Lots of us don't. It's because we actually are better.
The fact some of you seem to assume that's an insult only serves to tell us how right we are your case.
People here take themselves far too seriously sometimes.

I've seen both from the inside, and yes, they're more similar to each other than the extremist rhetoric describes. But the rhetoric itself is just propaganda.
I would have to say the major difference is the driving force. For Goons, they have an arch nemesis. For BoB its war. Each one has advantages and disadvantages in normal circumstances.
But as the BNCE fellow stated, Goons have an identity issue to deal with. Their early image propaganda is pretty entrenched into their members who're likely to look back on it with fond nostalgia. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

You've obviously not seen his local smack or read very many of his CAOD posts then. It's the caricature exaggeration of the whole BoB "we're just better than you" arrogant dumbass "elitist" image.
