The character has maxed shields, maxed command and is looking to add further defence capability.
I've heard numerous posters state that they only use smart bombs to stop incoming missiles? If so how many launchers are needed, how do you time the firing sequence? Is there a low skilling alternative... eg Autotargeters or FoF  No point in mentioning Defenders I gather!

I'd say smartbombs are more effective at destroying incoming missiles than defenders are, especially at short range, but it cmes with hefty fitting requirements and omgwtfbbq cap usage. Trick is to hit the smartbomb as soon as the missile enters it's sphere of influence which can be tricky on light and heavy missiles but is much more doable on cruise / torps. It can take away a big chunk of incoming DPS but has many added drawbacks like inability to be used in empire, and danger for friendly frigs, drones and pods.

I saw smart bombs killing incoming missiles thingy long time ago, never tried it myself.
sounds like a carrier can basicly ignore the phoniex.

I personally use smartbombs to take down drones, as it's a lot more effective they blowing them up with my main weapon.
I once had a suicide smartbombing Raven on the test server, and my friend was silly enough to fly within my range for just long enough for me to activate all 8 smartbombs, which insta popped him and blew up his pod.

aside from carriers, personally i would never consider a setup on any ship that used smartbombs, unless i was in a bs trying to nuke miners in highsec, but thats just me
