Yes. If you run missions in low sec, you'll want to keep a constant look out for probes on the directional scanner as long as there is someone else in local.

Yes, it happened to me, but they need to use probes (not ship scanners) to do it. Further, they can do it anywhere including high sec space (suicide gankers might find a multi-billion isk ship to be irresistable). As I recall, it's harder to get scanned out in deadspace. The usual approach is to scan on a regular basis (say every 30-60 seconds) for probes (or ships like covert ops) and head for cover when you see probes. Also they can probe out your drones even if you're not present. Scoop them up before you run, if you can.
All the usual tricks like aligning to warp and moving off the warp-in point help a lot.

Indeed.
Best defense is to pick a good system. Don't mission in an area of lowsec that has a lot of pirate activity.
Also, a good precaution is to drop one unit of ammo or something in a jetcan at the warp-in point. It will decloak anyone who tries to sneak into your mission.

For some strange reason, my inner carebear feel a bit of slinking resentment whenever I see you in local.

hehe, i like that idea to drop cans to break cloak. i hadn't even thought of that before but since warp in points are fixed in this game you could use that in a _lot_ of scenarios. i'll bet you could could plunk a bunch of those at the various distances you can warp to a gate or other object or think of something even more creative.

While the idea of people placing jetcans in the mistaken belief that this will protect them from cloakers brings a smile to my face, it doesn't actually work that way, and hasn't in a long time.
Cans prevent -recloaking- but a cloaked ship can pass right through them with no problems. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

K, good to know, I was worried for a minute there. (I'm on my way to Cloaking 4 atm). What if the mission runner brings a packaged shuttle and jettisons it at the warp-in point?

A careful mission runner can never be caught, so if they put effort in you stand no chance. I've seen ppl put alts in shuttles at the fist gate, now thats a real turn of and not really necessary (and doesn't help if the pirate is lucky with the warp in). But I guess its a good option if you CBA checking scanner every 30sec. The options listed above work well enough to avoid getting caught.
Best you can do as a pirate is to scan as quick as possible, making him not spot your probe (destroy it once you got hit), hope you don't decloak on warp in to the gate. And get a faction scram and ability to overloading you mods.
