I wonder how many civs have already found ours as a close match

Meh, While I think its cool that they finally proved their are other planets in the galaxy some time ago they have yet to find a carbon copy of earth, IE humans can survive on it without the aid of technology. When they do that is when I bet the world will have a renewed interest in space exploration.

So two Gas giants make a far off solar system a look alike. Kind of saying a unicycle is a look alike of a car.
When they find a solar system with eight planets in the same configuration, maybe then.

otally. I'm annoyed that the title of the news article got my hopes up. It made me guess that we had found another planet that can support human life.

The only reason we aren't seeing additional Earth-sized planets is because we don't have instrumentation precise enough to detect them. As time goes on we'll discover smaller and smaller planets until we find ones the size of Earth and smaller. ---------------- Tarminic - 34 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.8 (Updated 4/7) |

Obviously, then at that point we should be notified! Its probably also worth noting that no extra-solar planets have been observed directly as I understand it.

Correct - we don't have telescopes NEARLY as powerful as we'd need to resolve any kind of clear images from light-years away. ---------------- Tarminic - 34 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.8 (Updated 4/7) |

Direct photos? Nope, they are far too small at those distances to be photographed well not to mention they are dark and their star easily washes them out of the picture.
That said the evidence for the existence of planets being around these stars is rather overwhelming and no one who studies these things have any doubt left that these are anything else but planets.

To be fair, imagine the response if we spotted an alien megastructure, ie a dyson sphere. |

Depends how you define "observed". If you mean "Have they got streams of observational data that proves beyond any reasonable doubt that planet-sized objects are in orbit around given stars?" then the answer is yes, they've been directly observed. If you mean "Have they done a Polaroid?" then the answer is no. ------

Cuz it would be hideously expensive to exploit those resources. Not to mention getting several thousand tons of ore back on Earth from outer space for each haul is, well, not really doable currently.
When we invent anti-gravity engines and free energy to run it all (e.g. antimatter) then maybe.

Technically the streams of data say something is moving in front of those stars that their luminosity has a cycle, or that the star wobbles in conjunction of a large mass orbiting it. From this we get planets, but what if they were very large alien ships? It's indeed most certainly planets, but they have yet to be directly imaged, which is extremely unlikely at the moment as the stars outshine the reflections.

Capturing NEA's would be much better and easier. I had always wondered why they didn't do this in Stargate SG-1. A local source of Naquada would have been useful.

not to worry... long before we need to start harvesting asteroids for stuff, a fleet of giant spaceships with putatively friendly and peaceful beings who look remarkably human will arrive and seek to open fruitful and mutually beneficial discussions with us.
Of course, it will turn out they're actually giant lizards under their stylish yet severely cut uniforms who *actually* want to take our water and eat our flesh in some utterly implausible and *****pot scheme to save their dying planet.
Don't believe me? You will... just wait for the ships to appear. JUST YOU WAIT.
In the meantime, we'll keep launching our own implausible and *****pot schemes to save our dying planet

And technically a photograph is just optical damage caused to an extremely fragile piece of synthetic material, which then is used as a projector slide to burn an imprint on a large piece of photosensitive paper. It's not necessarily a picture of a cat sat on a laptop keyboard, but it almost certainly is.
Since when was photography the be-all and end-all of scientific evidence? Is it now true that nothing is certifiably true unless it has been photscopically imaged? Are all other forms of observation now definably inferior to direct photoscopic imagery? ------
