Hi all, I recently purchased a new laptop with the Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS card in it, so a reasonably decent GPU. Only when I run Eve, i.e. does not seem to get like this for other games, or say ATITools, the damn laptop gets so hot that I get the BSOD. I put a fan cooler unit under the laptop and it is now stable, but still very hot running. So, is it a known issue that Eve runs very hot? Thanks, Seato.

Edited by: Fink Angel on 08/04/2008 07:03:10 Yeah, I think this one comes up regularly.
My computer fans used to go nuts just sitting at the login screen. It's hard to pull information about exactly what your GPU is doing though, so apart from dissipating the heat there's not a lot more you can do.
Actually, there is ne thing you can try now and that's to set the advanced graphical option "Interval: One". This will only render frames as fast as your monitor can draw them. IE if your refresh rate is 60Hz it will only run 60 FPS.
Otherwise, say in a station, my GPU goes nuts and ends up 200 FPS+ which is a but silly as it's only drawing 85 of them.
(Test this with CTRL-F when the game is running, when you're in a station ideally).

The nVidia Control Panel Manager has a facility that monitors the temperature of your GPU. My 6600 card runs at 43/44C at the Windows desktop, mid to hi 50s with other games and shifts to the upper 60s and higher with Eve (panels off the PC, freshly cleaned card fan and an extra fan mounted next to the card). Your card may vary - I tried a 7600GS card (passive cooling) as a replacement and that went straight to 104C in Eve before I switched off. Given that laptops are notorious for running hotter, I'd say you got a problem.

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it. I was worried that maybe something was wrong with the laptop. I get the dreaded Blue Screen of Death before too long without the additional cooling unit beneath the lappy running. I have really noticed the heat rise, (I use a temp monitoring utility yes) just sitting in the station, more so than when undocked. I will try your suggestion and see if that helps out at all. Cheers, Seato.

Some may tell you to use interval two as a secure option. It would limit your FPS to 60 or to the monitor maximum debit. Mostly in stations which is where your GPU will go mad.
Due to many docked afk's, some people reported 3 cards melted in 5 years before they saw what was hapenning. Its not a new issue.

Have you tried setting "interval one" in graphics options.. it's not the default but it should be.

Laptops generally have poor circulation to dissipate the heat they generate as manufacturers cram more and more powerful parts into them. Make sure all the vents are unfettered so it gets plenty of circulation. Better yet, return the thing and get a desktop. Laptops just don't make decent gaming rigs.

The reason you are generating so much heat is the game hits your video card HARD.
In my 8800GTS 640mb SLI setup I go from 247w idle to 472w draw on the power supply while playing Eve (Obviously not all of that is Video the video cards).
If you want it to run cooler, limit the FPS (so the card doesn't work as hard) and lower graphic settings (again to reduce load on the card).

My 8800 GTS died the other week while sitting in a station. It used to make quite a bit of noise when playing eve, even with interval one set, then one day it started displaying loads of blue dots on the screen before restarting the pc. Lucky for me the card was only 10 months old so i sent it back to the shop and got a free 8800GT.
Then i find out that the fan speed on the GTS's are always set quite low by default so it probably wasn't cooling down properly.
