I and the character seller made a deal that I would buy his character for 2.1b, both agreed upon, he asked me for my account name, after I told him what it was he decided to back out. So now this guy knows my account name, this just seems very suspicious, is there anything I can do about this? Is he obliged by CCP to sell me the character now that he's asked for and received my account name?

He cannot be forced to complete the transaction, but if you think that his knowledge of your username is a risk, I would suggest changing your password to something secure and informing CCP via a petition with all of the details.

Raise a petition and your account username can be changed.

To be paranoid, you could establish a new account, and pay CCP to transfer your toon to it.
Im just saying.

Its a bit of a silly system where you have to give out your acct name in the first place. You should be able to generate something similar to the api keys that can be used for char transfers.

Looks like we were able to come to an agreement to complete the character sale in the end.

You can't do that much with an account name. Go ahead, you know there is one named John but you still need the password. Just make sure the password is real secure. ---------------------------------------------------------- Posting And You Disclaimer: This is a meta-game alt for meta-game discussions. |

There is no such thing as real secure passwords, and knowing the username is halfwork done for someone that wants to do any harm. _____________________________________ I am the destroyer of worlds and the also the cokie thief. |

Closer to 1E-30th of the work. I wouldn't worry, just make the password good. I assume (I haven't tried yet) that EVE locks out access if they start guessing.
edit: Also, for the OP, any paranoid user comes up with a new password every couple months. ---------------------------------------------------------- Posting And You Disclaimer: This is a meta-game alt for meta-game discussions. |

I retracted what I previously said. I sent him the isk for the character and he's making up multiple excuses now as to why he can't transfer the character yet, and more excuses as to why he can't return my isk, he keeps asking for me to give him a day.
Is this guy for real or what? Petition filed.

Your probably dealing with a teenager regardless of thier actual age so that petition should put an end to his juvenile shennanigans.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your Account name is just a small part of how you log it. So long as you a complex password and, if you are using Windows, keep your PC clean of Viruses and Malware, you will be OK.
The guy is just an ******** for backing out, that's it.

If you did this via the Market Forum you have nothing to fear. If you don't get the character you'll get the ISK back, and the "seller" will likely get a ban, possibly permanent if he was just trying to scam ISK.

I managed to get the isk back from him, it was a hard job, I suspected maybe this guy was just really unorganised and it looks like I was right.

This brings up a good point that I have always wondered about. If somebody is attempting to hack your account, would you even know?
From what I can tell, there is never any indication that an incorrect login attempt (password guess) had been made on an account. Is there a max number of failed login attempts that if made the account gets locked?
Surely some kind or message after a successful login, showing the number of failed login attempts since the last successful authentication would be simple for CCP to implement and would notify a user if somebody has attempted to guess their account password...
I seem to remember this being done for WC2 after logging into battlenet several years ago.

You know, that is actually a good idea. Wouldn't be hard to implement either. Allot of applications I use at work have that feature, where it shows a number of failed log in attempts under my secure id.

You should be safe anyway, it's the password that's the important part. Make sure you change your password to one that is 15 characters long and contains at least one number and one upper case character.
We do not enforce any character sales, the most we do is get you the ISK back if you transfer it but don't get a character in return. We also do not change account names.

Personally, I'd give him a day. Transfering a character can be kind of sucky, for instance if he didn't know before hand that the character had to be in an NPC corp for 24 hours... he might actually need a day.
That and you do realize there is no way (as far as I know) to transfer a character without handing over your account name.
Petitioning the guy should be your last resort, because it could get him a ban.
