I know there is a way of preventing your can from popping once you have jettisoned it.
could someone tell me a bit about how to do this and where i can find the items that stop your can from popping?

Use a secure container. Or jettison a new can and place the stuff from the old can into the new one.

i know i can do that, but there is an item you can put in the can to stop it from popping isnt there?

ah bookmark?
So if you grab the content from your container, and leave the bookmark, the can stays but it can not stay longer then 1.5 to 2 hours...

This is probably what you were thinking of. All jetcans, once launched, have a lifespan between one and two hours after which they will pop, regardless of what they contain at the time. Additionally, a jetcan 'pops' once you remove all items from it.
So chances are what you picked up on was a way to prevent this latter case from happening - simply leave any old junk item in the can (bookmarks are good because they're free, can be produced in a couple of seconds at any point in space and take up 0.00m^3) and the can will not disappear once you take all its other contents (e.g. ore).
There is no item you can put in a can that will make that can last indefinitely.

You can anchor a secure container in space and that will stay forever if one of the following conditions are met:
1. you open it every month
2. it is close to a station/pos (I don't know how close it should be)
