Howdy, I'm new to eve, and i guess I'm looking for any advice people might have for new players, also I want to find a corp to join.
So far the advice I've gotten is to train all learning skills to 4, this seems like a little bit of a drag because i can't use anything new while I'm doing it. Is it worth doing all that training?
As for what I want to do in the game I guess i want to try my hand at shooting people, I have a rifter and I'm not afraid to use it.

If you can't have any fun because you cant even fit an afterburner, no. If you don't have any immediate needs, and skilling some learnings does not interfere with your gameplay, yes, then it is. I didn't skill any learnings in the first month because i wanted to have some ships ready to lose and be able to fit some basic pewpew-stuff. I'd do it again.

too late paid for a month so I might as well play it for a month and see how it goes.
so you think train as i need and when i don't need get the learning skills ok seems fairly reasonable

Edited by: Spineker on 10/04/2008 06:13:50 Hi I would recommend learn a rank in learning and then learn a practical rank. Learning, Ship Skill, Learning, Weapon skill.
Don't burn your first few weeks worried over learning skills. It's not worth training learning all the time for your first weeks of game play. Its rather silly actually. Its fine to do that with an alt but not your first character.
Get your basic skills down. Also don't jump your skills around all over the place. To start out if you like missile boats then train missile ships and missile skills. Don't learn guns and lasers also. Specialize to start with, you have plenty of time to get some flavor later on.
Don't ignore your secondary ship skills, Engineering will make your life easier when fitting your ship. If you run shields you will need lots of engineering but you need engineering anyway for the power grid etc.
Just a few things there and read the ship forums and read on ship fittings then you will know what skills you need with a little research for each ship type. Be they missile boats, gun ships, laser platforms whatever your forte.
Have fun

Roll a minny soldier and get propulsion jamming 1. Now run missions and kinda figure out the interface and what not. After this run out to low sec and figure out how to lose and kill frigs. Your now kinda understanding this thing so get to L3 missions and get cash. Join a Agony Unleashed class which will blow your mind. Laugh at pirates when you get comments like "you guys won because of EW".After you get this comment you now in the EvE crowd.

Forget about the learning skills to IV at the beginnen... if you are training a second account, i would say ok but for your very first... no no it's boring
If you train some basic skills for about 2 or 3 weeks so you have a good basic, frigates, destroyer, weapons, some tanking skills,... so you could do L1 missions, do some ratting in 0.5+ then you should boost your skills to let's say III and then train some more fighting skills, go for the cruiser, battlecruiser, better weapons, tanking... then train the learning skills to the max and use some implants before :)
Otherwhise i think you will be bored very fast because you just can't fit the right stuff

Glad someone agree's with me. I think the whole IV learning stuff is silly myself. What's the point if the guy quits in two weeks cause he can't kill a few NPC cruisers and burns out.

Yah a good frig class to start is the best thing for a new player. Learning skills to 5/4 is what you'll need to get going. EvE is all about info overload which makes the game fun kinda embrass it.

ok, well it'll be guns all the way i like the sound of the autocannons, they just sound cool, I did train rockets to 1 just to have that addition weapon but i took them off to put on a gyrothing that makes my projectiles hit better.
I haven't really looked at many of the ships, but i must say i really like the rifter, it just looks really cool.
As for profession i think i went spec ops, either way i have afterburn to 5 and minmatar frigiate to 4 to start with, as well as navigation to 5, i though those skills were good because evasive manuvers I'm told is a really good skill (same person who said get learning skills to 4 said get Evasive manuvers to 5). Not entirely sure why but since i don't know better so I'll probable train EM next.

Welcome to EVE Reven!
Since I want your stay in EVE to be a "pleasant one" ill give you a few advice
1. Dont compare EVE to WoW. You will be dead flamed! 2. Dont use words like toons and guilds. Its bad! Use instead character and corporations! 3. No system in EVE is completely safe! Only safer! The green and yellow are "safer" while red are "warzones" 4. PvP are non-consentual! That means anyone are free to shoot you. Even in Empire!! They will just have to suffer repercussions by CONCORD after the attack on you! 5. On forums, read a while before you post! Many here will be breathing down your neck in anger seeing red by speaking about making the game more "Carebear". 6. This game is more hardcore then other online games! The losses are real and the level for calling things griefing is skyhigh! Keep your mouth shut is the best way to stay out of trouble! 7. Join a corporation as soon as possible! Use a little time and you will find a good one for you! 8. Be polite even when facing destruction. Or at least keep your mouth shut. Most people are here to kill stuff. Get used to it. Soon you will be out there killing stuff yourself! Try not to take it personal!
Sure there are more tips too, but this will do from me!
Good luck and welcome againt to EVE!

just wondering is it just Wow I shouldn't speak about or is it all MMOs that are not Eve, because i've played a few just haven't really gotten settled, i think SWG was the closed with the ship combat but it was a little sucky.
Eve combat looks to be pretty awesome and I can't wait to get a corp and start the shooting

WoW is really the incarnation of "everything wrong" for many EVE player. I guess you can speak about it. Just be carefull with praising it too much over EVE. If you do people will simply tell you to "Go back to WoW".
EVE is all about PvP. non-consentual PvP. Its a sandbox where every man and woman makes their own destiny. WoW on the other hand is a joyride. You follow the tracks and do what the story tells you to.
Well, you will learn soon. just follow the forums for a while, be friendly and you will be good!

I think you'll be fine
Just remember not to neglect your support skills, like engineering and capacitor stuff. I know they're not as exciting to train as gunnery skills (whoo gunnery), but they really do make a difference, both in letting you fit your ship and keeping it running while in space. __________________________________

There's a Recruitment forum further down. Corporations are always recruiting there, and they usually list the activities that they provide. Do a bit of reading, make a shortlist of corporations that appeal to you, then contact their respective officers. It can be worth it to spend a few days talking to several, to help decide which is best for you.
Make sure that the corporation is active in your timezone.
Originally by: Reven Zero train all learning skills to 4, this seems like a little bit of a drag because i can't use anything new while I'm doing it. Is it worth doing all that training?
In the long run... yes.
Is it the immediate thing to do? No.
Mix it up. As others mentioned, there's a tonne of other skills out there. Skills that you could be using now, rather than waiting on a learning skill to tick over. Many of the basic ones are Rank 1 skills, as well. Very easy to get up a few levels (especially in Engineering, Mechanic & Electronics) that will apply to almost any ship you can potentially fly.

get the apps eve-mon and eft. eve mon will let you create a skill plan while eft is great to help you fit your ships.
who ever told you to train learning skills to 4 is probably so far removed from being a beginner that he cant help it.
i suggest you train whatever skills you need in order to progress yourself. most low level skills are fast to train any way.
keep the learning skills in mind though and train them whenever you are happy that you can do stuff in your current situation with the modules you have at hand.

I'm surprised nobody mentions this: Get EVEMon ASAP!
With this tool (that should come with the client imo) you can plan your skills and it even calculates if you're better off learning a learning skill to reduce your overall learning time. Good stuff.
Was that 3x 'learning' in one sentence?

What I recommend to new players on my noobcorp alt is to make a short-medium term EVEMON plan.
This can be either a frigate or a cruiser with all the gear you want on it and some support skills. Don't do anything to 5 if it isn't a requirement.
At this point EVEMON should pipe up with a /!\ icon at the bottom of the window and tell you what learning skills will save you time overall.
This is better in my opinion because the overall plan is still on the shortish side and you can see that the learning skills are saving you time and helping you towards a goal. Repeat with a slightly longer term plan after this.
Have a look at this too. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

i really advise you to train some basic skills, so you can do some lvl 1 and 2 missions, and train for cruisers. Learning skills can wait a lil
in the middle, while you can't use a cruiser well, try destroyers. they are just a lil more expensive then frigates, but are WAYYYY funnier, and you can fit a lot of cannons (to the pwnage ) and you only need Destroyers lvl 1, eheh
about the corp thingy, there is this place, Eve University, it is a very good place to star playing. (www.eve-ivy.com) give that website a look
i wish you the best of luck

One thing to remember - most of the Skills in Learning, when trained properly, reduce the time it takes for you to train other skills down the road.
For example - had I not trained all of the Learning that I had in the early days, it might take me 30 days to train up a certain Level V skill. But, with the skills I did train, it now only takes me 22 days for the same skill.
A small investment now makes a big difference later. I'm a big proponent of 'getting it out of the way.'
The first skills I really focussed on were Learning - and I was still able to enjoy the game while doing it too. You actually do a lot of 'real' learning while you play - so don't move too fast in the game. You don't necessarily need to fly a Cruiser after two weeks in-game, even if you can.
I got these out of the way - and now, they give me the bonus that my skills train faster: Analytical Mind, Clarity, Eidetic Memory, Focus, Instant Recall, Iron Will, Logic, Spatial Awareness (all to IV), and Learning (to V).
I'm not saying what others are saying is wrong. I'm not saying that training Learning up front it wrong. But, I hope you take my differing opinion into account.
Fly safe.
