Edited by: Amouin Kurse on 10/04/2008 13:21:42 Edited by: Amouin Kurse on 10/04/2008 13:16:33 Posting with my alt, as I'm too ashamed to post with my main. [:/]
I think I may have made a tremendous mistake in how I assigned attributes to my main char back in char creation about a month ago. I've now little over 2M SP and think all this time of hard grinding has been a complete waste.
My attributes are (effective values in parentheses w/ implants plugged in):
Intelligence: 18 (+2, 20) Perception: 12 (+4, 16) Charisma: 9 (+3, 12) Willpower: 15 (+4, 19) Memory: 18 (+2, 20)
How likely is my skill progression be affected/impaired by my attributes (note low Willpower and Perception, and too high Intelligence and Memory)? In particular, I'm thinking gunnery and spaceship command skills.
I feel like as if all my progression in EVE so far has been a complete waste and that has sucked out all my motivation and love that was growing in me for the game. I really think my main char is fundamentally flawed attributes-wise and would appreciate it if you could confirm (or not) my suspicions and suggest something I could do to repair this mess that doesn't involve starting over (oh no, no more level 1's please!)
Please don't flame me, as I'm proper feeling like crap right now and I love this game just like you.
<EDIT> I can further raise my attributes w/ learning skills as follows:
Intelligence: +2 Perception: +2 Charisma: +7 Willpower: +2 Memory: +4
</EDIT>

Edited by: Lara Renquist on 10/04/2008 13:30:50 you have almost the same atributes as me.... been using them for almost 2 years now, yes people with more perception and willpower have tackled me in sp points that are combat related.... do i care? actually no, the difference is quite big on year basis but besides that pff it doesnt matter anything

If it bothers you so much, reroll. Yes, in the long run perception/willpower are significantly more useful for the typical combat oriented character.

With your memory being as high as it is, if you do decide to continue with the char, you're best bet is to invest heavily in drones as your weapon of choice.
And with such a high intelligence, it makes sense to augment your drone boats with heavy ewar - as you can quickly get those skills up to high levels.
For PvE this is obviously less useful. But you do have the advantage of being able to train up the support engineering, electronics, and mechanic skills very quickly indeed. While your ship, guns and missiles will all take longer than the average person.
If you do continue it's just going to be a balancing act where you'll probably have very high defensive skills, and your offense lags behind a little.
Also... it'd be worth looking at investing in probe related skills as they're pretty high ranked int/mem. You're going to notice that crucial rank 8 probe time skill will be a darn sight faster for you than many others.

Those stats aren't as bad as you think they are. All the support skills (Electronics, Engineering, Mechanic) require int and mem, some useful science skills such as probing skills, cybernetics and thermodynamics also require int and mem. Also, Navigation requires int as the primary skill.
In short while you might get fewer SP for gunnery and spaceship command you will make up for it in support skills, which are very important and require more SP in total than gunnery and ship skills combined.

those stats arent that bad. if it really bugs you, re-roll with a better balance between your stats with charisma still being low. *shrug*
my stats are pretty weird myself. i have an emphasis on int and mem more than perc and will on my char, he does ok.

Well, you can just max out all the int/mem support skills you can, like energy management, signature analysis, armor compensations perhaps... that will help. I wouldn't be that worried, it would take a while to make up a month's training even with "perfect" attributes for your desires. Unless your base perc is 3, then I'd consider starting over, it may be worth it in that case. Is your 12 perc after Spatial 5 and Clarity 4?

Main char's base perc is 12, without any implants on and spatial at 4 and clarity at 3.
I guess all you guys are right. While I'll take longer training up gunnery/spaceship skills, I'll have an edge on support skills.
Guess I was making a big fuss out of nothing, hey? :-)
Thank you so much everybody for giving back my motivation. You guys did it and for that I'm ever so thankful.

Training it right now.... 38 days total
sucks to be me...
I have high willpower/perception (29/29 with +5's and max skills) and low intel/mem (20/19 with +5's and max skills)
and I'm still around after 3+ years, and I don't regret it at all, in the whole course of playing, even if PvP is your thing, you are probably looking at 50/50 split on mem and intel skils to perc and willpower skills.
basically, you'll spend ages training up battle ship 5 or large gunnery spec skills, but you'll fly through all your support skills, and you can't have one without the other...

Obviously what I said was within reason. Nobody would train all 4 racial carriers, dreadnought, titan, jump freighter etc... skills. Same thing goes for gunnery skills, as few would have all the 6 large gun specialisations up to level 5. By the time you reach the point where you start training more than 2 races skill sets the difference between a few points in attributes doesn't bother much.
Additionally, if you look at attribute stats you'll find that int and mem are the top two attributes when considering all skills. |

..and perception/willpower are top attributes for combat characters. Don't believe me? Fire up evemon, load an untrained alt and queue a good year or so of pvp centered training, everything that you'd want on a pvp char. Then take a look at the skills pie chart: perception/willpower based skill categories will be prevalent.
Then add another year of training and you'll run out of int/mem skills to train whereas there will still be a lot of gunnery/spaceship/missile skills to train. A look at the pie chart will tell you that perc/will has become even more important.
Now this is of course for a typical pvp character and not for thr guy that decides to heavily train EW, leadership or probing skills or mix in some non combat related skills.
My advice? Reroll. 17 perception with 5/4 learning skills and +4 implants (if i understand the op correctly) is definitely bad.

Your base perception is 5 than ,train basic perception to lvl 5 and advanced to lvl 4 youll have 14 +learning and with +4 implant 18-19 (witm learning bonus) .Youll be very good carrier pilot if you can pass bs lvl 5 and advanced spaceship lvl5 beauty is you dont need any gunnery skills for carriers :

The OP didn't specifically say he wanted a pvp character. It's obvious that if a player is going to concentrate on per/will skills then he should have high per/will. If he isn't, or if he's going to dabble in other skills then it doesn't count for as much. And there can be quite a difference between what you deem is "all I'll eve want" for a pvp char and what all you will ever want. Some players concentrate on more support-type pvp skills (ewar, remote repairing, leadership, ship support.. etc...).
In short, if he wants a pvp char then yes, you're right. If he isn't sure what he'll be doing (as EVE is very varied) then some more balanced attribute or what he has now is good enough. I mean, who says he won't be training some science or industry skills later on.
