Roxanna dear, if you take movies seriously. I think you may have some problems
BladeRunner is a classic, done way before the use of any color screen. Be it blue, green or muave , thus it is a good movie to see. And if you need a pletora of special effects to "take a movie seriously", stay away from the black and white classics. Like The Day Earth stood still and the likes

Yeah, Bladerunner's a definite - don't really see how the slightly dated effects should make a difference, that's just a side effect of watching a film from 1985 which can't be avoided. But if you can put that aside (and you really should) it's second to none for sheer atmosphere. Following the theme, Ridley Scott also directed Legend at around the same time, featuring a very young Tom Cruise, a very sexy Mia Sara and a very, erm, devilish? Tim Curry - it's also worth watching.

The Fifth Element is a *very* good SF movie. A lot of plotholes, somewhat rubbish story, but brilliant style.
Immortel is a really strange movie... No real use to explain it, just watch it some time.
Equilibrium is "SF". Not really high tech, but still very stylish.
Sphere is also a nice one. Big balls of death :)
Tron is a classic SF movie. Sort of.

Bladerunner dated?
It's such a visually spectacular film even if it is done with miniatures and matt painting. Syd Mead did some truly amazing work on it and the city scape just looks right.
I believe bluescreen was created in the 30's btw. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

The Iron Giant - just a perfect kids movie that *will* make you cry, especially if you are a guy ;)
Silent Running - 70s dystopia. Watch it when you're in a SERIOUS BUSINESS mood. May make you plant a garden after watching...
Stardust - just solid great fantasy, nothing special but performances and design is amazing, and the plot is somewhat refreshing. A must for final fantasy fans!
Conan the Barbarian - WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE? If you haven't seen a full non-tv version, check it out.
Logan's Run - renew, renew, RENEW. Another 70s dystopia. --

Star Trek (even numbered movies only, odd numbered Trek movies stink)
Another BIG vote for BladeRunner. Freaking classic and still unchallenged for sheer atmosphere and vision of a future dystopia (well, actually Brazil beats it for sheer dystopian vision).
So another for Brazil too although expect to watch it a few times to really follow it well. Bizarre movie barely covers it but excellent nonetheless.
I will actually say Starship Troopers too. I know it majorly sucked compared to the book and was nothing like that classic but for just dumb pew pew in space it works ok with some decent space battles and brutal ground battles.

Dunno why but I really disliked that movie.
Maybe it was that I could not get past the idea that a bunch of unstable freaks like that would be the crew of a spaceship sent to save earth (c'mon...they'd be freaking NASA/ESA boyscouts). Then the movie turns into a slasher movie.

My SciFi TopX
Blade Runner (won¦t get any better) Solaris (great visuals, great acting, great soundtrack) 2001 (nothing to say here. Missed it? dork.) Dune (mediocre adaptation of the novel, but great movie anyways) Alien (still my personal "wet my pants" nemisis) Enenmy Mine (Hey... it¦s low budget) Moon Trap (couldn¦t sleep for 2 nights as I watched it when I was 12 or so) Outland (nice western style shootout in a space station) Phase IV (THE nature strikes back movie) Brazil (now thats weird) Soylent Green (creepy) The Abyss (still one of my favourites) Akira (Manga, though)
My Fantasy TopX
Ladyhawke (80s. Romantic, but brutal stuff with R.Hauer, M.Broderick and M.Pfeiffer) The Name of the Rose (not really fantasy, but a great movie) Willow (yeah... beat me.) Lord of the Rings (and beat me again.) Excalibur (ana-natrach... utwas-bethat...) Harry Pott... aw c¦mon... t¦was a joke Hidden Dragon, Crouching Tiger (Kung Fu, and yes... fantasy... no one stands on bamboo trees with arms on his back) Dracula (Maaaaaster...!!)

In fact I never watched the old soviet version... Oh, yes, I once zapped into it but it was about 1am. and the movie was just beginning... (it¦s a 3 hour movie)
I like the new Soderbergh adaptation. It¦s enigmatic, incredibly well shot and as I said before, the soundtrack fits perfectly (you can even mine to it.) Not as scientific as the book is, not as much focused on the solaris <--> mankind topic as, I believe, the USSR-version is. It¦s a good summary of the book, stuffed in the frame of 90 mins of hollywood celluloid.
