Wow servers have 10-20k people on it in total, ours has over 300,000. It's necessary and complaining about it wont ever change it. Amount of players per server doesn't really matter... they still have a hell of a lot more players to support overall, and that much more hardware to keep tuned up. But, yeah. If this were true each realm/server in wow would either need a daily downtime of ~5 minutes or a weekly one of ~40 Minutes. Either way Blizzard fails at maintaining a server farm. Or you could simply say that not all servers/games/programs/operating systems/networks etc etc etc work the same and they each have unique maintenance requirements. Now Stop trolling and go kill someone... in an nice non ganking, non smacking way (In EVE)

The other reason for the daily downtimes is that alot actually happens during the downtime including asteriod reseeding, soverignty checks alot of other respawning etc. If they had peak users at 500 / server they could probably have the downtime run at 10 minutes, but they'd still need to do it for game design reasons. Places like WoW could shutdown servers one at a time, at different times, CCP must do the entire universe at once. WoW can just hire more people for more servers and they can all manage a couple individually. Eve only has one server cluster so you can't just give different parts of it to different people to manage. Eve is to WoW as Wow is to an 8 player game of Unreal Tournament.

Twin blade Minmatar The Triangle	Posted - 2008.04.14 12:14:00 - [17] I do belive they did try to go 2 days with out having the sever down but after 24 hour's it was to laggy and starting to become unstable. i think the reason was simple every player in EVE will most likey have over 10+ time's the ammout of items than a WOW player and all that stuff puts more strain on the sever's. That eve runs more code per player than i think any other mmo that puts more strain on the sever than wow and so needs to bedown for an hour aday to keep the sever ok. Death is great rember where all dying to get there.

World of Warcraft scales 5 out of 10 where 5 points are awarded due to hype status. Eve Online scales 15/10 with 15 points awarded due to sheer awesomeness. And 3 extra for grieferfun. No server in the world can handle this overdose of awesomeness and that is why they have to rest for 1 hour each and every day lest they become exhausted.

I mean without that 1 hour break to finally pass out for our moar addicted players we would lose scores every day to death by exhuastion and too many energy drinks. and the spoonyg log thingy.
