out of curiosity, who flys black ops, and why. what do you use them for? im thinking of getting a widow, i already fly scorp, and am a capital pilot. Things i see over the scorp is -10 M/S speed cloaked, less HP, but capable of decent ECM, one extra cruise launcher, ability to cloak (but not warp... which would increase the use of these ships), and less targeting range for faster targeting speed.
Honestly with the cost/effectiveness of the ship at 500mil (as i last saw a few days ago) i'd be better off self destructing a carrier as its only 200mil more and much more effective in combat (depending on circumstances). Widow would always be made primary in gang only making it harder to fly with out ****ing yourself if the ECM didn't jam a couple cycles.
Where do these ships have a place in eve?

Edited by: Araviel on 15/04/2008 03:27:29 for gangs the jumpbridge capability is worth more than the ship imho, even if you only can cyno smaller and medium Ew class ships you can create some of the nastiest suprise attacks and ambushes in eve,
the cloaking velocity bonus makes it very hard to catch since it can fly cloaked at the same velocity you need for warp, in low sec you dont got much to fear when gate traveling. basicly you just have to watch out for bubbles.
but if your a solo pilot i dont se much reasons to get one, maybe the redeemer if you like to hunt Npc's in hostile territory

only problem is you have to get a cov ops in to cyno the black ops. if any decent alliance has good control a t2 large bubble is on the main gates. and its not hard to move combat ships in to remove cov ops and recon ships.
if the price went down to 250m-300m per BO, i would buy one. but at the current 500m i'd rather buy another carrier...

why is this a problem?

They're intended for the skirmisher role. To put gangs gangs into random locations behind hostile lines. With the right logistics (ie staged jump fuel on both ends) and prep a gang could jump in, have fun, and jump out before the hostiles can do much.
It isn't just an issue of isk. These ships are an idea in the need of a purpose. The problems are that it isn't worth risking the blackops except to get in and out. The ships that can cyno in don't have the dps nor the tank that most are looking for.
These ships combined with stealth bombers and recons should be the skirmishers of eve. However the nanos are currently much better at the job. Nanos are safer to jump through a gate camp. Nanos have much better tanks and dps. Nanos don't require the logistics and preplanning of having the black ops and fuel dumps. Nanos can square off with a blob and pick off anyone careless or two far away.
If there isn't any reason to use recons/stealth bombers in skirmish warfare then it isn't worth forming the group. Without a group the ship is worthless as is. I've heard by some that built and trained them that they make great hangar queens and spin around the hangar very nice like.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 15/04/2008 04:54:40 The Black Ops ships may have been better off if they were based on the tier 2 battle cruisers and given a nice tracking bonus. This would make them more suitable for skirmish combat, and the gang bonus inherent with the battlecruisers mean they could help their supporting gang be that much more effective.

Black ops are for spies in other alliances... so they can secretly gang their mates, and jump them in... TROJAN HORSE SURPRISE!

Black ops started as a way to avoid concord but that got fixed fast... still don't know how anyone on the dev team didn't see that one coming |
