Hello all,
I just spent a ton of money on my nice new Fenrir freighter and have no idea what to do with it... but I still just love it.
I love the way it takes 30+ seconds to warp from gate to gate. I love that it takes over a minute to turn around. I love that I can never, ever, ever fill it up. I love that I'm scared as **** whenever I fly it because it's expensive. I love that everyone notices freighters and kind wishes they had one. I love that corp-mates are always so keen to give escort when needed. What a fine conversation piece! Though I know I should be making money in it sometime.
Anyone else have any love for the freighters out there?
Cheers! Altee

Haha, actually you could log off in warp, log on an alt and check some market stuff, then log off and log back on your freighter pilot, and you'd probably still be in warp!

Can I get in a premature freighter appreciation post? I have an alt I put on a second account and spent millions in ISK on a GTC, implants, skillbooks, etc to train for a Providence. He's now about 12 hours away from completing training and I'm about that far away from closing on a deal for one.
One of my earliest memories in EVE - when I was a young buck coming and going from the Amarr Throne Worlds - was seeing all the ships docking and undocking from the Emperor's Family Academy. I'd click 'Look At' on one ship after another, to soak in all their goodness (and this was back in the classic graphics days!).
The most amazing thing I ever saw was this gigantic behemoth just floating off the station. It dwarfed everything, even the battleships at which I'd marveled. It was huge, but the design was sleek and elegant. It was breathtaking. I learned it was not a dreadnought nor a carrier nor a Titan. It was a freighter - a Providence.
In truth, I have almost no practical use for a freighter. My corp has said they have all the freighter pilots they need. I'm told I can never hope to make enough money hauling with it to ever get back the 1.6B ISK investment I've made.
Yet... tomorrow I'll undock with it for the first time and align (very slowly!) toward the Throne Worlds. Once I get there, I think I'll just let her float in space for awhile... -- Meridius Dex --

Ya, I hope you guys don't have any war decks.
Anyway, I'm skilled up for a providence, and soon I'll be skilled up for a jump freighter. Sure hope that comes down in prices. I really don't need either but dude, they're sweet. Anyone have any idea's what I could do with mine that includes it not getting blown up. Amarr is the tank OR gank race. Not the tank and gank race. |

In theory freighters are good for buying low and selling high kind of fun. You can go to www.eve-central.com and see if there's any goods to trade. With that much cargo you should be able to make decent isk and read a good book to boot. "Still haven't found that lost cheeseburger" -- Mar --

Yeah, I've looked at some of those numbers but, unless I'm figuring it wrong, you'd need to move like 2B ISK worth of goods to make 40M ISK worth of profit...
Believe me, I'd like to get back some of this investment. -- Meridius Dex --

You'll find how you look at certain markets will change when you have a freighter. For example, you might be browsing the market for a particular mineral... you might notice some of it for sale for 20% less than what you could sell it for elsewhere... then you notice that its only 5 million units of it and just not worth your time. You start taking greater notice of the sales for 86+ million units of minerals, instead... now those can fill your freighter!

i prefer 35 000 m3 occator // 5000 m3 viator - these ships can make more money with less costs involved
i will get an obelisk when the price falls to 300 mill

Meridius Dex... So I guess the real appeal of the Freighter is being able to sit in it and pretend that you're huuuge... Lol. Would be cool if you could block jumpgates with it. |

Dude, I just took it out last night for the first time. I'll tell you what, slow doesn't begin to describe it! Seriously, if anything decides to shoot this monster, it isn't escaping. I can't imagine ever taking it out of high sec...
After the first half hour and sending a bunch of screenshots out to my brother, I started to genuinely wonder what I was going to use it for. I have no idea how to determine freight-able goods and what kind of profits I could make with it. For now it's just floating there like a big, white elephant.
But it's still cool. |

I remember the days of empire->0.0 freighter runs. Those were fun.

As someone considering training up for a freighter, I am curious if it will be worth the time/money. (This is an industrial alt BTW). I can feasibly see myself using about 300k-500k m3 worth of materials a week, which will easily fit in one freighter load or 10-15 trips in an indy. Ideally I'd make 1 run a week with a freighter rather than many smaller trips.
So I am getting the impression that the freighters take ~4 times as long to align and warp, so it seems that foroverall time spent, its a win. What about getting ganked?
How many people use a freighter in this way?

I build battleships and Battlecruisers. I collect 100 million units of Trit a week. So I use a freighter.
I use a Bustard to pick up Mexallon and consolidate Pyerite orders then pick up the central locations with the Freighter and I use a crane to pick up most everything else.
It saves time.

It saves money.

Heh...well, if you ever get into a serious building group you will sing a different tune. Just last week myself and a corp mate moved 16 full freighter loads of mins to build from. Those were maxed (L5) charon BTW so as big as they get (epeen warning). So not quite 16 million m3 of stuff hauled (lots of builders in our corp).
If we used two Occators it would have taken us 229 trips each (or double that counting round trips so at 4 jumps each way looks like 1,832 jumps).
Believe me...a freighter, for all their slow ass plodding about, can be a huge time saver.
Personally I love the look of the Providence. I originally flew an Obelisk and hated how that thing looked. I mean just really, really hated it. Just absurd. As it was it didn't take long for me to also train up for the Charon so I did that, sold the Obelisk and got a Charon. Charon is ok looking and I can live with it. Does not have that massive feel the others do but biggest cargo where it counts so a wash. Fenrir looks like a freighter...just big and truck like. Providence is actually sexy. Really wish I had that one.

I'd love to see a computer animation of a Providence being loaded with cargo while in dock. I imagine the upper hull of the freighter splitting down the centerline and sliding down around the sides of the ship to reveal the cargo bay.
