Ok like a total "who reads the instructions not me idiot" i filled up my launchers with FoF missiles and started on the kill the pirates and the habitat but not the mining colony quest....Now not reading the info on the missiles i think FoF stands fer "fire and forget" ...sigh ....So its a total shock when entering the system they start targeting and firing themselves at everything ,beacons, wrecks and horror of horrors at the dammed mining colony..so have to do a quick warp out before i ruin the mission...then i read the info on the missiles "friend or Foe" so my question is what are the mechanics of FoF missiles and can i get them to target just the bad guys or have i wasted my cash getting them. |

FOFs should target the closest object that is agression-flagged towards you.
That for some obscure reason ALSO automatically includes most mission structures from the start, but does NOT include pirate NPCs from the get-go. The FOFs start firing at pirate NPCs only after least ONE in the spawn agressed you first. Not only that, but to be even more bizzare, FOFs do NOT cause the rest of the NPCs in the spawn to aggro you, even if the FOFs start hitting NPCs in a spawn that still haven't aggroed you before.
It takes a while to get used to how FOF missiles work, but once you get the hang of it, with a decent enough tank, missions can practically run themselves (you only need to come back to restart the launchers after they reload). Sure, you waste a bit of ammo on shooting down structures you wouldn't normally be shooting, but that's about the only real downside... which can be avoided by maneouvering properly, so that the closest target is always a NPC instead of a building.

Note all missiles, even the "unguided" ones, are fire and forget. All you need to worry about once they are out of the bay is maintaining your lock and they will eventually hit.
Fit normal missiles. They are easier to direct, and do more damage per round than the FoF versions. FoF's are really more of a situational weapon to use when facing enemies with a lot of EW (especially damps and ECM).
