I wouldn't get your hopes up for a Premium release before the next next expansion, as in whatever is due in December of this year. The Premium graphics renderer requires D3D9c (Shader model 3.0) functionality, and at a moment that's a mess in Wine. They've only finally hammered out SM2.0 functionality, and that's on the Linux side. On the Mac side there are some outstanding issues with the GL Shader Language (GLSL) being fully supported/operational, which precludes SM2.0 operation never mind SM3.0 operation. Before we can have Premium graphics Apple needs to fix some stuff on their end, and a lot more work needs to go in to Wine to help it play well with SM3.0 graphics. That's not going to happen in the next two months.
Plus, as someone so eloquently pointed out, the client still isn't running very well with the Classic graphics. The Premium graphics mode isn't going to fix the crashing or the corruption, and it'll definitely be slower than the Classic graphics mode (just as it is on the Windows side) at a time when the Mac client is already slow enough. What you should be hoping for is Cedega finding a way to separate the EVE and Wine translation threads, the biggest holdup to performance right now is that everything the EVE client does and everything Wine does exists in a single thread on a single processor core. |

Awesome! No less! The very real and genuine trans-gam-ing-web-site! Whoa!
And so?
Actually there's an interesting big on their Cedega site saying that they will have a beta ready on June 1st with Shader Model 3.0 support. Now Cedega is only for Linux and as I've mentioned earlier SM3.0 support is much farther along on Linux than Mac OS X on the main WINE tree, so this doesn't necessarily mean that they have SM3.0 working for the Mac yet, but given the that both the Mac and Linux editions use the same code base, my assumption is that they are close if not already at the point where SM3.0 works on the Mac.
Now if EVE Premium is working or is as buggy as Classic was on its release is anyone's guess. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map |
