Not tried it first hand - I was originally meant to be doing Beta but only had 56K and didn't want to spoil the experience - but.....
Reading last months's PC Gamer Mag, they put Eve at No1 online game to be played using a 56K modem. So long as you're not Teamspeaking all the time I guess that means it's OK.

Perfectly acceptable.
I use a 56k modem and there's only a little lag during the "busy" period on Sunday and Monday nights.
Obviously, there are exceptions but they're more "one-offs" than a regular thing.

Yeah it's fine, there's not a lot of difference most of the time. Some of the more advanced market actions can take a few seconds to load - the charts etc - but generally it is good. I have been 56k for 6 months and I've not had any major problems. Can take a few minutes to log in sometimes however.
PC Gamer rated eve the best online game for 56k modem owners

When my 2.5Mbit line was out for half a day I played Eve on a laptop with an GPRS cell-phone modem. The maximum throughput of that is even below 56k. Like 38k or around that figure.
It did run pretty smooth while in space for most of the time with some choppiness and lag here in there, where I don't know if that was due to the line, or due to crowded systems. The load times after jumping through a gate appeared to be longer, though.
All in all I'm not sure if I'd take my BS through low sec while on that line, though.

there is absolutely no lag, the client server compensation ensures you would have the same locking time etc as anyone else, in a handshake based method "Teh lord of Nonni"

eve only uses 28 or 36.6kbps NEVER more... Thats why us people with nice connections lag. Like me ;D even with 3mbps its like =[****************** So basically it depends more on location then connection on your ping time. (which is always true if connection speeds are the same).

Edited by: Star's Muppet on 22/04/2004 12:47:27 I use a 56K modem, and EVE runs like a dream. I've seen it at others with ADSL and Cable, and in space I couldn't tell the difference...
What I did notice, is that on broadband your login can go faster (my friends don't have those long login's as often as I do) . Another little thing is that the market and escrow seems to load a little bit faster for them.
But since that doesn't matter for PVP, I don't mind at all |

I run 3 eve clients and TS and/or vent depending on situation (ran on three computers all networked) over a single channel ISDN line(64k) with no lag, my mate runs his EvE fine on 56k with TS.

I did beta on 56k for eve and had no etra problems people on BB back then. Also Laird and 1 or 2 Hadeans also run on 56k's and say its not caused problems specially when running TS also. Is remarkable such a game is able to function so well on such a low band connection. Saal Iverson - The Council (C6) |
