Is there such a thing as a Palm Top Computer that will let me actually write text on a screen and then make a decent attempt at translating my scrawls into text, that I can then port onto Word on my main computer?
I really could do with something like this as it would let me do some work stuff while commuting. I also like to think of myself as something of a budding author, so again, something like this would be useful for scribbling down ideas, and those inspirational scenes that often pop into my mind, but which by the time I am able to get them down are often as not lost.
Thanks in advance |

Yes, there will be such a thing, but I can't point a specific one out for you. I used to have one of the old prototype iPaq Pocket PCs with Windows CE on it (before they were even commercially available). There were two ways of inputting text into Pocket Word - one was an onscreen keyboard on which you tapped the keys. The other was to write on the screen and the software would recognise the handwriting and put it into neat letters.
Mind you, it wasn't perfect. I have pretty clear handwriting and the recognition software often made quite a few mistakes. On the other hand, this was years and years ago. I expect the handwriting recognition technology has advanced quite a bit since then. --------------------------------------------------------------------

There's loads.
I don't know how the market is now but last time I bought one they ran from small PCs (I assume now you can buy tablet PCs there is a continuum) down to much simpler devices for note-taking and organising yourself.
MS Office compatibility should be a no brainer.
Beyond that I suppose it's the usual question of what specification and features you need. I'd try and have a play with one in a shop to see how sluggish/reliable the handwriting recognition is in practice if I were shopping for one. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I had a Palm Zire 71 years ago, and it was invaluable for taking notes. If you can afford it the Palm TX (http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/tx/index.html) it's a solid PDA for taking notes and surfing the net. It comes with Documents to go, which integrates right in to MS Office so you can easily transfer documents between the PDA and your PC, and update them if you made changes. I believe it also comes with a folding wireless keyboard too. The handwriting systems takes a bit to learn, but is quite easy when you get the hang of it. Its a very handy thing to have.
Hope that helps.

designed primarily for kids, but a very nice gadget for adults to play with too if you're into such things.
you write on special paper and it uploads it to text on the puter.
the paper is inexpensive and so is the pentop itself, moderately inexpensive anyways.
the wave of the future.
