knitty gritty first: Need most sustainable dps setup/training advice for megathron. Rails or Blasters? I'm concerned about range and cap with blasters.
Details: I'm looking for advice on what to train towards for best dps in missions. I play with my brother anytime i do missions and he goes in first and tanks. That said i'm looking to find out if i should go rail guns or blasters? My job is to kill everythnig.. FAST. We do lvl 4 missions but would like to get to level 5 someday also. I have most of the background skills and hyrbrid turrets 5 for small, med, large. Just haven't started to specialize yet. Thanks! |

I've just started using a mega with 425mm rails. You need at least 2 MFS (damage mods) and I'm thinking of trying the 350mm rails out. The 425's use a lot of cap.
Have not tried blasters but I assumed that in deadspace it would take too long to get into 'blasting' range! Who's the rudest of them all! |

With not being able to use MWD's in most missions I consider blasters to be pretty much useless for missions. The time it takes using a AB to fly all over the place is "teh suck".

If you're using a Mega for PvE (and it sounds like you are), you should use rails 90% of the time. 425s are overkill for missions since you don't usually need that kind of range and you will end up seriously gimping your tank due to powergrid issues. 350s are fine for missions; they do similar damage as 425s and their better tracking, combined with the Mega's tracking bonus, means that you'll be able to hit cruisers rather often.
One suggestion: if you're going up against EM weak opponents, you may want to consider fitting 6 rails and 2 cruise launchers to help overcome your rail's limited damage types. |

Mostly true. Some missions, like Damsel in Distress, are perfect for blasters as the BS like to orbit you at 5km. That's when I smile and fit my Modal Megas. It's like popcorn in the microwave. |

Thanks a bunch for the info everyone. I'll look into possibly using 350's. I don't know much about sentry drones. I'm pretty heavily trained in drones though so i could probably make decent use of them. What's the advantage? they do similar damage to heavy drones but can't fly around?

use Ogre IIs - they do more damage than T1 sentry drones.
Advantage of sentry is they don't need to fly to the target. Damage is still good. T2 Sentries are fab. Who's the rudest of them all! |

for a sensible approach go rails with a tank. for a fun approach go blasters with no tank . works a charm in lvl4's with a tanking buddy
if you drop all that heavy tanking stuff you get a ship that has a full rack of neutron blasters, an AB with a full rack of webs on the mids, 3 damage mods on low then your choice of go faster stuff or tracking stuff after the damage mods.
this sort of ship, when paired with your tanking buddy, is guaranteed to put a big grin on your face.
yes you do waste time getting into range, but webby drones help catch the snipers and when you do get into range everything just melts in front of you.
my mega has a damage control unit as the only form of defence and has taken aggro from 4 serpentis blasterthrons and splatted the lot leaving me on 50% armour. that was more fun than i have ever had in my tanked up abaddon.
so, your choice, fly smart or become a suicidal wingman. i know which i prefer and i'm slowly corrupting my corp mates too
p.s. a rack of webs lets you triple web a spider drone for an instant pop from the main guns or it lets you snag 3 other ships chasing your mate down to and keep them all in blaster range as you pop them one after the other. Because sometimes you just have to go back to your roots: [2005.02.20 01:08:03] (combat) Your Civilian Light Electron Blaster perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 20.3 damage |

If you haven't trained much for either sentries or heavies, I personally would go for sentries. Similar DPS to their corresponding heavy drone without the flight time. They also require less time to train than T2 heavies since they don't require their corresponding racial specialization skill. You can also use rigs to improve their damage; these rigs used to be broken but I don't know if they have been fixed.
The longer range sentries (Warden, Bouncer) will have tracking issues up close, but if you're packing a web or place them smartly (i.e. further away from your target than you are, but still in drone control range) they still hit pretty well. Gardes + web = excellent short range damage. If you already have T2 heavies but not T2 sentries, you're probably better off using the heavies up close and switch to lights for longer range stuff unless you don't mind the travel time.
Most of the time when I fly a Mega, I'll be packing 4 sentries and 5 lights. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |
