I started playing four years ago, and quit after two. Now I'm back with a new character. The first time I played, I was really big into mining and manufacturing, and all I have to say is "What happened to the mineral prices???" I found an old mining worksheet that I had used, and compared to current prices. Wow...
When I left the prices were
Trit: 2.5 and rising, so I can under stand the 30% increase to 3.3 ish Pyer: About 4.5.... and it hasn't changed Mex: Was 12. TWELVE!! Today it's 3x that price or more!! Iso: Was 98. Which means it dropped thirty percent Noc: Was 300. Which means it dropped like SIXTY percent Zyd: And mega were not on my sheet I and I can't remember, but... Mega: Was definitely worth more than Zyd. By a lot. Like double.
Wow.
Did you know that Plag is the BEST thing you can mine short of gneiss??

Oh, and I remember when the price of trit dropped to .94 a unit. Yeah, bit of a difference from now....

Well, lots of things happened to the mineral market, most of them I can't even understand. (such as the massive price increase with mexallon)
However, zydrine and megacyte dropped a lot in price because there are drone regions now, and those drones don't drop bounties, only alloys that can generally be refined to large amounts of high-end minerals.

I wonder if that's what crashed the iso and noc markets too.

No, those minerals had crashed way before drone regions were introduced.

2004;
Trit: 0.85 Pyerite: 2.6 Mex: 7 ! Iso: 110 Nocx: 350 (did get up to 650 at one stage in 2005) Zyd: 3500 Mega: 4800
Quote: I wonder if that's what crashed the iso and noc markets too.
Yes though nocx was on the way down from 650 at the time already. The drone regions produce tonnes of excess iso/nocx/zyd/mega. After Zyd crashed to about 1400, the amount of Zyd in some of the compounds was halved, and the result, the price went back up. Recently the amount of megacyte coming out of the drone regions was halved and the price has jumped up quite alot (was before that worth a good bit less than Zyd !.
With mining, people can switch when one ore becomes less valuable, which keeps prices stable, with the drone regions you get what you get so the prices tend to be based on the overall output of loot drops. Adjusting these slightly has seen major price effects. Also Mex started going up about the time battlecruisers were introduced, some of the first products to have a higher than usual demand for it, but it went up quite abit when the drone regions were introduced as this was the one mineral those regions were deficient in (after the trit/pyerite was added at the same time the zyd was removed- pyerite got up to 9-10 isk before that). Now recently there was some mex added, so the price has come down abit.
It ripples but the amount the drone regions have affected the game is quite amazing.

Once upon a time, CCP removed NPC market buy-orders for minerals and high ores in empire, setting the market free for the high ends, which led to a "zydrine-rush". Then they introduce the drone regions, effectively enabling people without mining skills to inject goods into the mineral market, driving the prices down. Now, they remove the price cap for trit, thinking that, for some unknown reason, high-sec mining would become more profitable for non-macroing players again, which it wont, since the macros will still undercut you.
What needs to be done to make mining a worthwhile profession again is:
- Remove Alloy Drops completely - Increase the usage of high-end minerals in t2 production, expecially morphite (its at 20% of its baseprice since nobody needs it), also increase use of mega in t2 production, enable miners to profit more from t2 production, atm, they get approx. 10% of a produced item - Somehow involve mission runners (80% of players) with minerals, since these types typically buy faction/deadspace/commander ships and items, which are not connected to the mineral market AT ALL
If these steps are undertaking, mining might once more, and for the first time in years, be not the least profitable venture an eve player can undertake.
Right now, mining blows. Big ones.
