I have got blank mid-slots on my Kessie at the moment, and some Isk burning a hole in my pocket, but I cant make my mind up what to put in them.
I am setting the Kessie up for running light but expensive goods into low-sec stations, so I have filled the two low slots with a named Nanofiber and Instab. The high slots are filled with standard launchers.
Therefore, even with some training in Engineering and Electronics, my grid and cpu are running low (4 and around 30 respectively). What is the best way to go? I kind of decided to put a shield extender in, but should I sacrifice one of the launchers in favour of some ECM?

Edited by: Heelay Ashrum on 21/04/2008 12:49:39 if you move things u dont have to engage.. so why put weapons? You should also choose the "faster frig" or your race and put in low inertia stabs ( turn&warp faster ). if u chose between caldari ships i would go for condor:
high: nothing ( or cloak device) med: mwd, battery ( or cap rec) low: 2x inertia stabs

Besides being best off using a CovOps for low sec trading like that, if you do get caught by someone, that shield extender isn't going to help you at all, and neither will the missile launchers in the highs for that matter. Anything tanky enough to survive gate guns will easily be able handle 4 light missiles and deal enough damage to pop a T1 frigate.
Imo your best bet would be to put in a cloak and MWD, forget the guns unless you have spare pg/cpu to fit them after the rest is done.
After that for meds, you could try ECM to try and jam a tackler if they do catch you, although with a cloak and MWD you'll be incredibly difficult to catch anyway (after being cloaked from jumping, double click in space to align, turn on MWD and cloak right away, turn off cloak as MWD turns off, click warp. You should be going fast enough to instantly warp off).

Edited by: Ordon Gundar on 21/04/2008 12:54:52 I keep the launchers in to give me the option of going on a ratting run after I have completed my trade run, without me having to return to the starting station for a refit. It keeps the routes profitable if I cant find anything to carry back and sell. I dont like arriving anywhere with an empty cargo hold (be it trade goods or loot).

Honestly, you're better off swapping setups or ships for that.
A kestrel isn't the greatest low sec runner like that, and a low sec runner setup is gonna look different than a ratting setup. For a ratting kestrel, ideally you'd want bcu's in the lows and probably a shield booster in med, but for low sec running those are all useless.

Shield extender might help against smartbombing BS's at gates. Just put your weapons offline if you need more CPU/grid, then when you want to go ratting you just turn them online and your ECM offline.

You make perfect sense of course. It is now obvious that I need to specialise more in terms of what job I am undertaking at the time.
However, I know the Condor is faster, but the cargo space is awful. I really need the extra space in the Kestrel to make the trips worthwhile.
If I clear out the high slots of launchers, that is going to free up a hell of a lot of grid and cpu. This brings me back to my original problem of what to put in the mid-slots, but I dont want to wait for the Cloaking training to finish so this kind of negates the need for a MWD somewhat.
Oh well, I will have to think more on it.

I would fit something like:
Highs Cloak
Mids 1 x MWD 2 x small shield extenders
Lows 2 x Nano/Istab/WCSstab

Is there anything that can go in highs that doesnt involve me waiting forever to train up to cloaks?

Kestrel is great for novice traders because it has a cargohold like a flying box car, nearing that of some cruisers (if not exceeding a few)
Aside from weapons or a cloak, there is not a lot of mods that go into high slots and not a lot of mods that would do a low sec trade runner a lot of good to be honest. If you intend this character to be a trader, cloaking is well worth the training time. If you don't intend for it to be a trader and nothing but a trader, cloaking is still pretty worth the waiting time.
The Kestrel, just as it happens to have a boxcar of a cargohold, also tends to fly like a box car compared to other frigates. If you're not fast an agile a cloak is the way to go... other wise you may want to pick a fast ship and make multiple runs if at all possable.

You are right in terms of the speed and agility, although my Spaceship Command skills, Nanofiber and Instab means that I whip round into warp pretty quickly.
I also intend to train Evasive Maneuvers aswell.
I will go down the cloak route after I have trained the basics, as I do intend to make low-sec runs a decent part of this characters role.
