EvE has been the pioneer for alot of things. Most of the game infact is not only refreshing but pretty solidly developed. However the one thing about Battleships and Up is that they are large, and barring any particular In Game story material they are crewed by more then 1 person. Well I believe that a type of 'boarding ship' would be an excellent addition to the game as it brings several new things.
-New Tatics in fleet battle -New skills -Possibly new ships -Uses for lots of goods that are more or less unused
The basic concept is that a smaller ship that of a cruiser or frigate would carry lets say. 100 units of Elite Slaves. They would then use a new type of warfare called boarding. They would attatch to the Hull of a battleship or higher and empty their elite slaves into the ship possibly like a cargo container. (Note sending all at once or squads may be a tatical decision) At this point the battleships crew would have to defend. This could possibly reduce the ships stats or more realistically will just be another thing the pilots need to worry about. The victim ship would have a base to overcome for the boarder they can raise this base by having 'personel units' of their own such as militia or something of the like.
This is a pretty basic concept at the moment, I will be fleshing it out later in this thread depending on how much attention it gets. |

Boarding enemy ships have been discussed several times. Your idea is different and intresting.
The only problems I see are below:
When can you sent the boarding party when the sheild are down/ when they are into hull etc?
Given that starship hull are built to with stand hits from nukes (one of the light missies it a nuke) how will they baord the ship and you will have a job cutting though the hull.
Trasfering the boarding partly as if it was a jet can, still means that they have to travel up to 1.5km's in an environment that does not support life, this combined with weapons fire near the target (its own of people firing at it) as well as them moving at 100's m/s. This makes in space transfer almost impossible.
To counter this people will just fill their hold with defenders, givne the logistic problems of ammo an dcap booster it will only make it worse.
Maybe an Idea of some type of POS warefare

It would be possible to board a larger ship, maybe BS and up. All you would do is
1) Fire boarding pod at the other ship encased in a foam barrier 2) When the foam hits the other ship it sticks on 3) Spikes/suckers from the pod them attach onto the ship and the foam is jettisoned/burnt off 4) The pod Uses a high intensity laser/flame/blade to cut into the shiph then the pod opens and troops go in 5) If borading doesn't work the pod explodes or just sits there
Also it would be possible to cut though the hull of a ship or they woudln't be able to cut the armour up to make the ships which is show by the fact ships aren't just big and flat. |

Edited by: Jeshin Takruid on 23/04/2008 05:06:00 Well if you've ever actually looked at the units something like a slave or a militia take up it isn't terrible. I'd have the worst affected people would be the cap boosting large ammo hauling crowd. The type of POS warfare is an interesting concept, maybe even outpost warfare?

There is one problem with boarding ships - suddenly piracy becomes 10 times more profitable (thats ok) but going to lowsec almost always ends up in loosing ship and not getting insurance, because its boarded, not destroed. This means 50million lost instead of 10 for an insured battlecruiser with inexpensive fitting. Loosing the first cool ship on a first trip to low is common and painful, but without insurance its worse. This ends with less people willing to risk their ships in pvp, especially in small groups. And motivates blobs and gatecamping more then today, because its more profitable and more secure.

I think it has potential if done right. few things i'd do for it.
- boarding doesn't grant you control of a ship, it can disable or weaken systems but the pod pilot is always in control. - boarders have their own seperate bay (similar to drone bay). It may say be 300m3.. RP wise it would be more like 10 barracks each 30m3. - to board an enemy ship you need a high slot module which launchers a pod (like described in post above). Limit to number of boarding pods that can attack a ship at once... he only has soo much space in those corridors. - variety of teams some only for defense (ie turrets) some only offense (demo teams) - boarding teams would be able to disable guns and modules. similar to heat damage, possibly even use same system. |

THAT is a nice possible option AFTER adding subsystem targeting. |

Boarding would create a purpose for marines.
But being able to boarded ships creates problems, I was thinking why not make it so you can boarded space stations that be pretty cool as long as you could watch or take part. |
