How I assumed they worked: They obviously increase the signature radius of the target ship. This allows faster lock times to others in your group and makes it easier for large guns to hit small ships. It has always been my belief that if you have a gun that shoots x size and the target is already at least x size then a target painter would not do much for you/ your group mates. After fooling around with the tracking guide it appears that this isn't so. Any increase in signature radius equals a better hit chance and more possible damage. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks in advance. |

It will also help with tracking.

Just remember that the tracking guide located Here takes into account more than just signature radius and a turrets sig resolution.
otherwise, it can mean what you are saying. Any increase of a targets signature radius can mean you have a higher % chance of hitting it (depends on the resolution of your turrets as well.) The concepts in that guide explains are difficult to put into words, probably one of the reasons CCP wrote it. You can use page 5 of that guide to help you take into account all the factors, and the graph will help explain exactly what outcome you should expect.

Larger sig radius will mean that you hit harder and more often.
If you gun's resolution matches your target's size, and tracking matches angluar velocity, then you will have a 50% chance to hit.
Increasing the target's size by painting, has the same effect as increasing your turret's tracking.
Thus a target painter (25%) is more effective than a tracking computer with a tracking script loaded (20%).

I rarely (never) see target painters on suggested loadouts on the different sites and forums which I have been lurking. However, to me it seems like they could definatly fill a good role, the most obvious would be to help taking down smaller ships in a large ship, or simply hitting harder/more often when attacking similiar sized ships?
Personally I will try them out alot more and see if they are worth their spot in my fit.

The relative size of the ships actually doesn't matter (unless we're talking about missiles of course) - what matters is how well you are tracking them now, since a target painter will give turrets a straight-up tracking bonus. If you're hitting them 0-1% of the time, a painter won't really increase your hit rate to anything noticeable. If you're hitting 95+% of the time - again, extra tracking will have a very marginal effect. However, if you're in between, say hitting 50% of the time then the TP would increase your hit rate and damage noticeably.
There is an interesting thread in S&M about target painters, which mentions the fact that tracking computers are better at long range, and web are much much better at short range, thus reducing the situations where they might otherwise be used.

Painters are good mod's
but saying is one thing
if you are flying a shield tanking ship then you have to give a slot up for it making your tank less.
if you are flying a armor tanking ship then you lose a slot for ecm/scram/webber/cap recharger..
depending on what ship you fly and how many mid slot's it has..
