Edited by: Rabid cat on 22/04/2008 17:08:53 help a newbie with speed tanking dominix!
Everyone is saying that my setup is very bad and i shouldnt using anything like that and its blashphemy to speed tank domi? HIGH: 5x dread guristas 350mm rails drone link augmentor MED: 4x cap recharger 2, domination 100mn ab LOW: a factional LAR 4x rat specific hardeners 2x magstab RIGS: 3x ccc
And some drones of course!
I have very poor skills (only 5,2m) and according to evefit my optimal damage is 550dps. (with gallente navy antimatter) Also I haven't actually had any tanking problems?
Also my cap recharge seems to be good enough, so I could try gettin rid of one cap recharger? Or should I or are there any nice med slot module which I could use?
But everyone is still saying this is bad setup?
What should I do help?

what modules exactly are you claiming give you a speed tank?

Ya, thats not a speed tank. All you have is an AB. You need a fast ship (BS arent fast) to start with, then you add rigs to boost speed / reduce mass, and add lows to boost speed/reduce mass. Finally, you add a mwd. you have done none of these.

Thats because theres no mods on it that increase speed, agility, and thus speed tank it. Its just a giant capicitor ship with a weak tank and expensive loot for guns.
Also, its gonna take a little more than 5 mil in SP to be an effective Battleship and / or nano pilot.
Here are several hints -
1: Most BS can't nano. not after the nerf. Those good for nano'ing are usually faction, like the Machariel.
2: Speed tanking requires speed. That fat, slow, ship does not have it. You need a MWD, cap injectors to help sustain it, and low slots full of I stabs, nanofibers, and depending on ship size maybe over drives. You have none.
3: Drones, Missiles, Nos / Nuets are nano ship weapons. Guns are not... at decent nano speeds most guns have issues tracking. If you're hitting anything with your 350's you're probably moving too slow.
4: My last piece of advice. Scrap this idea. Slap yourself a decent Dominix together as your slow moving, hard core tanking, beat machine and get a cruiser or hac or recon to nano. |

You're a newbie with 5mil skillpoints and you want to fly a battleship. How did you get this far and be able to afford faction equipment?!?!
You don't 'speed tank' missions. You are limited to an afterburner.
Speed tanking means you fly too fast for guns to track and hit you, or for missiles to hit you.
Look up a mission running sniper domi to complete missions with. Leave speed tanking for pvp, and a ship that's actually capable of reaching high speeds.
Man.... I waited months to fly a battleship, had decent support skills and weapon skills, and it took me ages to build up the isk to fit one properly. I can't understand how a 5 mil skillpoint character has the isk for dread gurista rails, domination afterburner, and a factional large armor rep - or feels that 5 mil skillpoints is enough to handle a BS properly.
Some advice to save you money - bigger does not equal better. Work on flying a Myrm/Vexor really well. Fit them properly (you seem to have the isk to fit them quite nicely).
Where exactly are you planning on taking this speed-tanking faction domi anyways? |

Edited by: Rabid cat on 22/04/2008 18:13:09 Oh thanks for clarifying! I thought it was speed tanking if I am trying to outrun or kite the rats. :p
I really havent had much tracking issues? I think the guns are hitting quite well when kiting? Also with this tactic I have enough tank for almost everything.
I do get something like 550 (optimal) dps with ogre1s (according to eft), how bad is this?
And yes, I have been running lvl4 missions for few days. I was so scared when I tried them first time, but they all have been quite easy! The income is also pretty decent, so I can quite easily afford cheaper faction modules for now? Though if I lost my ship, it would be a catastrophe...
And I used myrmidon for lvl3, It worked very well that, but I think it would be a little too weak for lvl4? And the other battleships would be much harder to fit. :(

Why the hell would you stick deadspace rails with faction ammo on a droneboat? Get a Hype/Mega, that's what they're designed for, and the extra turret slots and grid will do wonders. Also, poor skills + battleship = comedy killmail fodder.

NO, THAT'S A BAD NEWBIE! Now go and write out "I will not fly anything I cannot afford to lose" a hundred times. |

But with fation ammo I get more dps and finish faster the missions? Well I'll try fitting one of those with eft. But I still think I would get highest dps with domi.
But everyone is complaining that carebears only want reward, without any risk. :)

I think the point is that the major part of your damage comes from drones and thus it's not very wise to fit faction guns on your ship as it mostly just raises your risk. Using faction ammo is questionable, you have to check how much more money you make by completing missions faster at what price of ammo. Also a somewhat high speed lowers the damage the rats deal and though you don't have what would normally be called a speed tank it seems to be fast enough when you can run lvl 4's with just a single lar. Be careful of webbing rats though as this would most likely lower your tank quite a bit and thus could get you destroyed. What i would recommend would be to use normal named guns and just sell yours or put them on a gunboat. The cash you'll save when you die will most likely be enough for a new ship. |

Dont use faction ammo, those rails arent really problem imo, quite cheap. (well much cheaper than the 425mm dread guristas rails i had to buy).
And a dominix is one of most noob friendly battleships, it will do fine with 5M SP. Just dont use faction guns when you dont got isk to replace domi. Make sure you get t2 drones (small and med vs scramming frigs) and t2 tank asap, and you should have no problem. Oh end use 2 LARs + replace magstab with cap power relay (iirc). Then you got much better tank, what is always handy if you dont want to lose your ship. |

Honestly 5m is perfectly fine for a dominix, you could probably fly a dominix relatively well with like 2-2.5m sp (assuming no learning of course).
People always say to wait for x amount of sp to fly a bs, but so long as you can afford to lose it, and somewhat know what you're doing, you can jump in one waaaay quicker and start making money faster.
The whole wait until x sp to fly a ship applies more in PvP, where flying something with crap skills is just a free kill.
