So, what's the word on missiles in Eve? Are they worth putting time and money into? Should I bypass them altogether? Which ones are the most effective for new players?

I believe "light missiles" and proper light missile ammunition is the way to go with missiles in the beginning.
"Rockets" is possibly dealing more damage than light missiles but they have limited range and thus are not that interesting to me at least.
A bit later when you fly a cruiser, "heavy missiles" will be more suitable when fighting npc cruisers and battlecruisers.
And so it continues with cruise missiles, torpedoes and finally citadel torpedoes on dreadnoughts.
Another type of missile ammo, beside racial ones (em, explosive, kinetic or thermal) are "friend or foe" f.o.f missiles, that fires when your ship is aggressed. These also come for several types of launchers mentioned above.
Guns might be more fun for pvp later on, as guns hit ships right away without flight time. I have trained both some missileskills and a lot of gun related skills. |

Definitely worth it for PVE, and for some PVP situations. The majority of PVP'ers prefer guns, though, due to the fact that they hit instantly, esp. at long ranges. |

Missiles cause more damage and are more accurate. Rockets are like more powerful short range missiles. Guns hit instantly and have a higher rate of fire.
The big advantage I've seen to a new player with Rockets over Missiles is - they are a little easier to get into skill wise and take up fewer resources, such as power grid.
I prefer missiles to rockets myself but when I can't fit missiles I fit rockets.

Edited by: Kneebone on 24/04/2008 21:33:25 Missles are PvE and Siege weapons. They have their own versions of the secondary skills that guns do, and generally make for easy going in the beginning. You can adjust their damage type based on resistances, etc...
For PvP they have a lot of factors that work against them, but they also have their place as well. They are great siege weapons and against a webbed target the short ranged assault launchers like Torpedos/Siege Launchers are deadly.
Whats missing from the above post in Rockets v. Missles is that they are short ranged. Missiles have a speed and a flight time. Rockets/Heavy Assult/Torpedos are all short ranged, kind of like blasters or autocannons. Standard/Heavy/Cruise/Regular Assult Launchers use the standard missles which are long range. They also are generally faster then the close range versions. In something like a Caracal or Raven they can have extreme range, but you have flight time. A Cerberus (Caracal HAC) or Golem (Tech 2 Raven) can put out some impressive missle DPS and a Cerberus can scare Inty pilots :)
A Raven fitted with Torps will destroy a webbed opponent at close range fairly quickly.

There are short range missiles: Rockets (S) Heavy Assault Missiles (M) Torpedoes (L)
And there are long range missiles: Standard Missiles (S) Heavy Missiles (M) Cruise Missiles (L)
As with other weapon types, the short range ones do more damage and thus are better for PVP, while the long range ones let you avoid damage and kill lots of unintelligent NPC rats slowly, and are preferred for PVE.

The long range ones are perfectly good for PvP, it's just that you have to be close to the target to use them effectively.
One must realize that missiles aren't like guns, range-wise. Long range guns only work at longer ranges, unless the target is webbed to Hell and back. Long range missiles work at any range. So you can use them perfectly well in PvP as long as you stay near it so the flight time is greatly reduced.

Missiles have the advantage of making tracking irrelevant. If your target is cruising at "normal" speeds, then, your missiles will always hit no matter what your speed or angular velocity is. Orbiting a vessel in a fast interceptor, for example, you're much more likely to inflict damage with missiles than with turrets.
Missiles also allow one to inflict damage even when, due to EWAR or just the normal time it takes to lock a target, one has no target locked. "Friend or foe" (FoF) missiles do their own targeting, seeking out the nearest hostile vessel. Jammed? Damped? Lows full of Warp Core Stabilizers? Your battleship tackled by a T1 frigate? Launch your FoF missiles, and you're immediately dishing out some DPS.
One capability missiles afford that is rarely employed is the ability to shoot down incoming missiles. Load your launchers with Defender missiles, and they will target and attack hostile missiles.

There're many reasons why they aren't used, though, but all combine to equal that they don't really work and you're better off shooting at the target than trying to intercept its missiles.
