Edited by: James Leutre on 25/04/2008 18:20:37 Edited by: James Leutre on 25/04/2008 18:18:30 I have about zero experience in L4s but am setting up a battleship to try them out. It will be using rails, and my drone stills are so-so (lvl 5 drones, lvl 4 drone interfacing, but I can't use the T2 ones yet).
Due to being new to L4s, I'm a bit scared of losing my ship because of warp scrambling frigs. I also think the drones will remain in the ship except for emergencies, because I heard they can aggro whole rooms.
My question is, if I fit a meta4 web, will I be fine killing anything I face using railguns?
Note : I have motion prediction 5, I don't intend to use tracking mods, and I don't have tracking implants.
What I'm afraid of is that some ships may orbit me at, say, 15km and be too fast for my rails while also being out of webber range. Do any frigates orbit you at more than 10km? Are any orbiting at more than 10km hard to hit using rails with Motion Prediction lvl 5?
EDIT : I will be using 425mms.
EDIT 2 : I forgot to mention the ship has a 7.5% tracking bonus per level, and said level is at 5 in my case. |

Get tech2 drones. For missions, you'll probably want that mid slot for something else (cap recharge or something), IMO. |

Edited by: James Leutre on 25/04/2008 18:30:02 Edited by: James Leutre on 25/04/2008 18:29:20 Won't drones be a problem in some L4s where launching them causes the whole room to aggro?
EDIT : Note that I plan to get T2 drones anyway, I just didn't see it as a solution. |

You basicly always want to have drones in lvl 4 missions. Otherwise you are 80% of the time busy trying to hit frigs and cruisers.
Usually if there is drone aggro in the first place, they only attack your drones and go back to where they came from when you put drones back in their bay. Sometimes they then do agro you, but that disadvantage is nowhere near the advantage using drones give you.

Alright then, so my rails with 0.01563 rad/s tracking will only be used to kill battleships, while my drones do the rest?
Note that I will have above 1000 DPS of tank versus the rats I will be fighting so maybe aggroing whole rooms occasionally isn't much of a problem.

Anything that comes within 10km will not be a problem in the first place.

I'd strongly recommend not using a smartbomb. Sure it is handy for those rare occasions where rats orbit within its range, but the risk is far too high. If you get probed out and they manage to get tagged with a sb blast ... gg concord.
Frigs in missions are eaten alive by t2 medium drones, drop those in the bay and you're good to go.

drones are definately the answer, you will soon learn when to draw them in and protect them. I find webs a real nuisance after a while.
rails for BS and approaching cruisers/frigs, drones for the rest.

If you got more than 1000dps tank you really dont need to worry.
Also just watch what your drones are doing. For example on damsel in distress lvl 4 they got irritating habbit of attacking kruul, resulting in a new spawn of machariels. But besides that there arent many problems. And even if you manage to get scrambled (not many missions have scramblers in first place) and get more than 1000 dps, your tank should still hold long enough to launch drones again and let them kill the scrambling frigs.

pack a wing of rat-specific t2 light drones and you don't have to worry about scrambling frigs ever again. If you're shaky on a mission, just make sure you take out the scrambling frigs with your drones first. |

The only reason I would consider a web in L4 missions, is on a turret based ship, like a railguns megathron. That would be to hit the close by cruisers-bc-bs ... but most of the time its not needed, drones help for that and you can snipe ships on approach. Can be useful when you start next to them.

Edited by: James Leutre on 25/04/2008 19:49:58 Alright, thanks everyone. It's encouraging to hear my tank is pretty good. About the drones causing problems with Kruul, I'll probably set them to passive and make F9 a hotkey for "engage my target", that way they won't always go for the biggest target around whenever they finish the one I ordered them to.
I have a question though... with my tracking (mentionned above : 0.01563 rad/s), will I be able to hit an orbiting cruiser at, say, 15km, or will I have to use drones for those too? I ask because I might consider using blasters and an AB if my rails will be idle most of the time, lol. As an alternative, I could replace my webber with a tracking computer (with tracking script), to get a tracking of 0.02032 rad/s (still sounds kindof low for cruisers orbiting around 20km, IMO).
What do you guys think?

Haha, the thing is I'm setting up a railguns BS for L4s so now you understand why I intended to fit a web.

drones will be your best friend for frig swatting.
however with those rails when your out at range pop the frigs with your rails, then the cruisers, then the BS all the time the rats are chasing you down. as soon as the rats get into their orbit range you want to focus your guns on the bigger ones. a lot of the time this means you can kill the scrambling and webbing frigs before they even get into range.
there are a lot of missions where its hard to get out to range though, or the frigs are just too fast to take down before they get to you. in this situation you want to get your drones to mop up the little guys while your guns work on the big guys.
drones are best deployed where every rat in the group is aggroed on you, then your drones wont get shot at. if they do pull them in and wait for the rats to shoot at you instead.
i cant speak for rails as i seldom fly with them, but i doubt you will be able to hit the frigs in orbit even with a web. 2 webs might work though, or one web and 4 webby drones (leaving you space for 5 lights, its a megathron right?). 4 webby drones are the same as a named webber, not the best one but good enough. you can also use the webby drones to pin the close range BS's down and move out of their gun range (serpentis blaster boats and angel autocannon boats).
i guess its a choice of lots of frig swatting drones or one set of frig swatting drones then either the webbers or some heavies to help you break the BS's tanks. your call really.
on a more important note take a look at www.eve-survival.org for some good advice on the missions and join the in-game channel helpmymission, more advice there and you can get a wingman to help you through your first missions.
good luck with getting into the lvl4's, and fly fun Because sometimes you just have to go back to your roots: [2005.02.20 01:08:03] (combat) Your Civilian Light Electron Blaster perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 20.3 damage |

Cruisers at 15km are hard with 425mm rails in my experience, at 20km it is doable. But easier is to just prevent them from orbitting. Approach them, when you get a bit closer than their orbit range they suddenly want to run away, so they start flying away from you in a straight line, making easy targets.
When a group is far away just load long range ammo (well lead will probably do), and shoot frigates first. The only thing that limits the speed you can destroy them is your targetting speed. Often i cant activate all my rails before the frigate is destroyed (so they fire on the next target i have, which sometimes happen to be a juicy BS wreck, or even worse a can with mission items i need).

I was relunctant to admit it, but I guess I will anyway if it helps you guys help me.
Here it comes... It's a KRONOS. Yes, a Kronos for PvE. /me gets killed by a mob of angry forum warriors for intending to PvE in a Kronos.
But as you said, "fly fun", which justifies my purchase of this ship for L4s.
So yea, I mean it when I say anything that gets within 10km is toast 'cause I'll be webbing for 99% velocity. And yes, this is one of my first battleships and I have no experience with L4s (oh and I indirectly said earlier that my Marauder skill would be at 5 but it'll be at 4, my mistake).
Thanks for all the advice from everyone.
PS : Don't worry, I intend to get slightly more familiar with L4s (using a T1 battleship, not sure which yet) before I enter one with my Kronos. Oh and you can bet your a-- I'll be checking eve-survival before entering any mission also.

Not at all, its what there are made for.
The only thing that will get you killed is that now people know your are flying one around ;)
And then yeah, I would try to squeese one in. Kronos gets a better cap recharge than the mega (but one less rig slot) and a rep bonus, I think you can live with one less cap recharger.

I intend to fit my Kronos with much less than a billion in equipment, and doubt that someone would suicide-gank me for profits. I'll be using mostly T2 so it certainly wouldn't be a profitable thing. |

If you are considering a web, get a 15km web. Anything less is useless.
Domination web is what you are looking for: 200 mill, 99%@15km (with bonus) Anything less is just a waste of a slot.

I was seriously considering getting one although not necessarily as soon as I buy the ship. Probably soon after, though.

I don't, but Overheat skills are also part of the not-so-long term plans simply because they can be a life-saver when you get into a "heated" situation (lame pun intended). |
