Edited by: Scrogz on 25/04/2008 18:18:52 I am new to Eve. Yeah, believe it or not there are new people comming on-board!!
I've read through the guides and done as much research as I can and I still have a question and would like an opinion or two....
How long should I stay in my Osprey before moving to a barge? I believe the answer is when I can fly a Retriever? So, does it make sense to train up to Cruiser 4 for the extra yield from the Osprey or should I just head straight for the Barge?
I know it will not make a huge difference but I would like some opinions.
Any other support skills I should grab before making the training run to a Retriever?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm currently in the same position you are...I'm using an Osprey on my way to a Retriever (just started the game about a month and a half ago).
Imo, just go for the Retriever asap.

retriever will be about 600m3 per minute using 2 t1 strip miners. I don't recall offhand how much the osprey is per minute, but I would judge more off of what you want to achieve.
If you want to focus on mining, then barge is the 1st step to the hulk, which is the best mining ship you can get. If you plan on doing missions, or ratting a bit, then maybe cruiser could come in handy for those tasks. Really up to you which way you decide to focus on 1st.
Main skills for the barge (or any mining really) should be mining 5 (adds to yield), astrology 5 (adds to yield), industry 5 (barge req.), science 4 minimum, then mining upgrades a few levels if you use them, hull upgrades is you want to use cargo expanders, and shield skills.
Best defense is drones, so can use some training there to ward off belt rats in lower than .7 systems. (drones 5, scout drone 5, gallente drone spec 2 is recommended for 5 hammerhead tech 2 drones.)
once you get a barge, to fit t2 strip miners and t2 crystals, you'd need to add refining 5 (low end ores only need 4) + each ore processing skill for the ores you mine to lev 4 each. Some of the higher end ones require metallurgy skill as well.
Should cover a couple months of skills toward hulk w/t2 strips/drones if you decide to go that route. :)

Thanks for the advice Forgo....
I have many of those skills already I was just curoius about taknig the extra 2 level of Crusier for the 40% increased yield before starting down the path to Barges cnosidering you need Barges 3 before it's worth making the move, from what I understand. Looks like it is going to be at least a couple weeks so it might be worth it.
Helen, what do you mean you would not get a cruiser at all? Could you explain further? Sorry, I feel like I am missing something. |

Personally, i went for the Racial Mining Cruiser first - mine was the scythe. It worked really good, was getting 400m3/minute with it, so i was quite happy. I could also shoot up lvl 2 missions, so that was nice as well as being able to mine.
If i had to do it over again, i would do the same thing...I don't want to be stuck in a frigate for however long it takes to train for a Retreiver, i would much rather be in a cruiser.

Head straight for the Retriever if you're serious about mining. All the skills for it are useful in mining where Cruiser skill won't be particularly useful very soon in your mining career.
Here's a few advantages for the retriever:
1. 3 minute cycles -- 3x(or more) Less ore dragging 2. Larger cargo bay 2000 m¦ vs 495 m¦ - If all my lasers & drones drop off into my Osprey at the same time I'll run out of cargo space and my lasers will stop. The retriever requires far, far less attention. 3. All skills developed are useful for your mining career. 4. Better ore m¦ per minute by probably 20%-30%.
Osprey/Scythe are great mining cruisers but they are really for a combat pilot that wants to or has to mine part time... Not for a serious miner. (It would be in the path for a battleship miner but those are really another matter)

Retriever vs. Osprey is a good question.. It really depends on your long term plans in my book. The Osprey will mine faster than the Retriever at cruiser 5 (perhaps not 4) - I was doing this. And a Rokh with a few mining laser upgrades will compete with a Covetor while still having other uses. If you are going to go all out mining, train for a Hulk (which means go for barges now). If you're intending mining as a secondary to pay for other things I'd go ahead and do cruiser 4 - you'll put yourself too far behind on other skills if you stop and get a barge. |

Edited by: Bluedisguise on 26/04/2008 15:50:24 I know you read it, but Halada's guide really covers this well. If you have money, you can skip some steps, but being a noob as I was following it in the order he lays out is wise (frig -- cruiser -- barges/BS)
