I would really like it if flying through the EVE universe often felt a little more like flying through actual space. The swirling clouds of red and blue that can be seen in every system are pretty... but space is really black and we all know that. I don't think the nebulae should be removed, but what about making some systems have colorful, visible clouds, while others are simply black and starry. Planets in "dark" systems would only be visible in the same way that we see our moon, as in have a phase look to them where only part of the planet or moon is showing. Just a thought to make eve look more diverse and realistic. --Freedom |

so you want ccp to nerf...space?
go get trinity, it makes all the light in a system come from the sun ie: darker darkside. ____

HA!!
But I agree with the basic sentiment of the OP, EVE has a terrible sameness about it. Systems, constellations and regions aren't terribly recognizable. About the only distinctive feature are starbase designs. Some tactile sense of place would help immensely to know "oh, I must be near Blah constellation" rather than just "I'm 12 jumps from where I want to be".
On a similar note, a fellow player noted that EVE lacks terrain. From a tactical perspective, fighting at one stargate is the same as another. It would be nice if there was something that made a spot a unique place to fight.
He told me a story about a bug/feature where a stargate wound up with an agent near it. The area around the stargate was a deadspace! Suddenly, MWD didn't work. Nanoships were caught flat footed. Traps could be laid and sprung. Those who knew the terrain could use it to their advantage. Combined with the fact that the system was a bottleneck meant the fights were often, unusual and epic.
So I'd like to see that. Visual, auditory and tactical uniqueness amongst the systems. A sense of terrain. |

I'm currently spending a lot of time in a system with a green background. Almost the same green as the activated module colour. Very annoying.
I also remember a time when a bug made the background nebula not show up. I preferred that look, so I'd like an option to turn off the backgrounds in all systems. |

I have to agree, same dust ring; different color. It's like all the systems were born out at the same time from different nebula. As I understand it most dust rings are gone by the time planet formation is done. A consult with NASA or ESA might be in order. Might be nice to see a comet zooming around from time to time too. Also would like to see less bland planets. Moons like Io and Enceladus with geyser plumes or something like Titan would be nice. It would be nice just to stop a minute and watch in wonder at the marvels in the system instead of just zipping by because everything is static bland.

Even a system with a number of stars other than one would make a nice change from all the made up phenomena we see. |

I liked the feel of this deadspace environment, it was a fresh change from the usual background.

Edited by: Sethose Olderon on 28/04/2008 08:32:55 Also, nebulae in real space span light years in distance. Therefore, I would assume that nebulae in Eve span at least one region, or so it seems. Because of this, these nebulae would be visible from the map. It makes no sense to have them span through multiple systems and not be visible when zoomed out in the map.
Bust as far as Eve being realistic, this is just the tip of the iceberg. And, I too would like to see an on/off setting for the nebulae. Reshape EVE for the future! Sell the 0.0 gates to player owned corps, and encourage an open ended universe.

I know that Comets are a big thing, currently on the Drawing Board section. The whole nebula thing is difficult since that as stated earlier, the major nebulas span several systems at a time, and that going to them would be a form of mid point. The distances involved would be huge. That would mean a major, major expansion.
Dont get me wrong though, I would love to see some of the ideas in this thread, especially more deadspace reagions like the screenshot linked in an above post - reminds me of the Badlands in DS9. (Trekkie, please dont kill me!)
Perhaps link the two ideas, and allow nebulas to be like, new systems between the existing ones that are accessed by old/new methods. Backstory could be that the fires of war are forcing empires to extend themselves into these massive nebulas in search of resources.
These systems would be misty or pea soup systems though (based in a nebula, duh!), casting long shadows off distant objects, big flares etc, speculative effects, haloes, solar flares, trails of gas from engines etc. All of this would need an overhaul of the current graphical mehcanics so as not to cause massive slowdown. Surely a basic mist/fog effect isn't too hard to impliment in this engine, for the classic versions of the client. The more advanced effects would need to be optional for the 2.0 engine.
They would also need to impliment some form of tactical enviroment, such as transient dead space pockets that prevent the use of MWDs in areas, but allow normal warp travel, or that reduce the effectiveness of certain modules and/or sensors. Resource wise, be relatively untouched systems (lots of rocks for miners) - BUT, very few high security, lots of low sec and even null sec pockets.
Overall though, I'm completely in agreement with the idea that EVE does need a face lift to bring it alive. The ships look stunning, but the universe feels static. So lets have the next peice of the puzzle drop into place, and make EVE a more immersive experience. :) - - - - - - - - - High sec miner. Why could possibly compel me to hurl my Retriever into low sec at you, unless it were loaded with explosives, and would destroy you too. :) |

It would sure be nice to be able to turn it black on the general setting screen. I have a type of colour blindness (protanopia) and I spend a lot of time rotating my ship around to find a part of space with enough contrast so I can see if my modules are on or off.

Edited by: El Codge on 28/04/2008 15:13:50 Although not realistic in the slightest, what i'd like to see is the background brightness adjusted based on the number of pilots in system.
It would serve as an immediate indicator of how busy a system is and would also create a nice sort of feeling of travelling from the country (0.0, pitch black) to the bright lights of the big city (Jita, Rens etc, nice and vibrant).
Also agree with poster above that regions should have their own unique colour, with the added possibilty of an inter-regional gradient of colour (much like Photoshop's Colour picker). This will allow yourself to know roughly where you are in the galaxy, as well as how busy a system is all in one go.
You could probably explain it away as warp drive exhaust gases or something
