Question: If I don't take out the smuggler's gate on my first attempt in lv. 4 mission "Enemies Abound" 5/5, am I generally screwed?
In over a year and a half of missioning, this is my first 'privilege' of this mission. Up to this point NOTHING has threatened my tanks. I use a ccc'd Raven for general purpose missions, and my Nighthawk laughs at missions like WC, The Assault, etc.. So I fly in w/ my Raven expecting to rush the gate and flatten it with torps. Did well but by the time I entered into it's structure, I had to align for the bail as the Minnies were too numerous and very accurate. Thought now I'll switch out to cruise missiles and snipe it from further back. HA! I refit, flew back, and when I came through the last gate, not more than a second later, the whole room locked me, a second or two of lag, and that was THE fastest I've seen a tanked BS go POP.
Lost CN XLarge Boost, CN Amp, etc etc....but I am more astounded at the fact I stood NO chance. No other mission comes close. Do I dare take my Nighthawk in? It's one thing if it was any other race of enemies, but those Minnies (those Tempests) are just so accurate, so the tactic of buffering damage with a smaller sig and little more speed seems mute at this point.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

EA 5/5 has the potential to deal over 3k DPS if you don't manage to take the incoming ships down fast enough, or have to warp out, and come back when all of them are already there. If you don't have enough DPS to kill most of a wave before the next one arrives, better wait until downtime when mission resets and try again... this time, maybe bring in a couple of friends, or fit for "gank" instead of "tank".
P.S. I suppose you could try to do what you did, just complete the objective and ignore the enemy ships, but it's a bit too nasty for my taste... just kill all enemies first, THEN kill the gate, when there are no more enemies left. Would you go in with two torp Ravens, you might stand a chance of killing the gate before it gets too ugly.

Normally I do kill first then complete other objectives last, but this one I thought I would be different.....
Well, if the spawn DOES reset after DT, great, I can handle it after that. If it doesn't....Holy crap!
Sure loosing 500M in mods sucks, but after that passed, I am impressed! I'ts been a while since a mission has challenged me like that!
Thanks for the 411

I fitted a cap injector and tried perma running my xl boosterwhile popping BS after BS after BS and so on eventually after a long fight and 2 warpouts to get more cap charges I made it and all i got was a major faction standing hit and a ton of tags lol.
Never again <_<

I used to be afraid of it. I couldn't do it in a T2 Raven.
Using a faction fitted CNR, I was able to kill the spawns as they appeared, so that the DPS against me never got too bad.
The tags were quite nice, but I wouldn't recommend doing it with less than a CNR or other-faction equivilant.

Well the biggest mistake (as you noticed) you can make in this mission is to warp out somewhere at the beginning and come back later. The whole room aggro will take down any (single) tank. Killing the stuff fast enough though, gives you a good chance, Faction fitted Raven can do it, CNR it's imho quite easy, last time I did it with a cerberus (had all 6 Darkatanas left in the end, took 6 warpouts till I got 2 down and was able to tank the rest^^).
So your NH should be fine, if you follow the normal mission progression and don't warp out somewhere at beginning and in again some minutes later.

Hi,
I've soloed this in a T2 (Cruise) Raven about 4 times now - the first time I nearly got my arse handed to me because my mistake was trying to take down the stargate before dealing with all of the spawns.
Somehow I managed it but it involved what seemed like 150 warp outs, but I can't really remember as I had drank about 2 bottles of wine that night :)
Now I find it a lot easier; as soon as you warp in - align for warp and gas it. Take down as much of the initial spawns - I usually go for the Tempest/phoons then the sentries.
From memory you get a Darkana (spelling?) in the next spawn - switch to explosive and take it out and continue to take down the rest (use drones to take the frigs/ceptors when they get close but pull them in when a new spawm arrives until you aggro it). I find by about the 3rd or 4th spawn I am taking the spawns down almost as they appear and I never get overwhelmed.
Finally when they're gone, I redock and return with a torp Raven with target painters and a full rack of BCU IIs to deal with the stargate.
A faction fitted CNR can probably do this in a less 'chicken' way but I only fly cheap ships for missions on principle.
Hope this helps someone.
kind regards

I found it best to always leave the Darkanas alone... they have the lowest damage/tank ratio, so they're not a priority target... focus on wiping out the other ships first (the ones with high damage/tank ratio) and you'll be fine with a T2 fit Raven (T2 med drones recommended for the smaller ships).

well congratz on beating it alone because there are lvl5 missions with less DPS than EA 5/5 so you've beat a lvl5 mission practically

Yeah but from what I've read you get neut towers in lvl 5s and my setup requires an XL Shield Boost II running at all times so I'd be screwed for cap.

true but you don't want to run lvl5s alone you want someone that can give you cap and shield(or armor). so you could be the tank on a lvl 5 if you wanted and you could take a few friends along and have some fun.

Thanks for all the input. Glad to know both it is a tough one and not just me ;) and that it is still doable...albeit not very proportionate of challenge vs reward. I'm sure as long as the spawn level resets my NH will do fine.
Thanks again.
