I went out today with my very basic knowledge of scanning for plexes in 0.0. I found one that was a drone hive with gates and structures but no rats? Then I found a plex with a gurista wall and some sentry guns and a few pithum rats of cruiser size! I called for backup and we started on the plex, it spawned 3 times and ended with pithum exterminator BS or something similer. However we didint get any sort of interesting or exotic loot and the rats had low bountys, only 539k for the BS! Is there any way of knowing the quality of the rats in the plex before starting or is it just luck based suck it and see? I plan to scan alot more plexes out in the future so any advice would be greatfull to help me in my explorations.
Are there any skills that will help me find plexes, I am just using the basic scanner to 5AU!

Wait.
You are using the onboard scanner or scan probes?
The onboard scanner finds cosmic anomalies, plexes are found with scan probes.
and as to the difficulty, in both cases the results with lower signal strength and the ones that take longer to find are usually more profitable.
IIRC it can take quite a few sets of quest probes to find a difficult 0.0 site.(so that is hours of probing to get just the first hit)

What he said.
Cosmic signatures, the exploration sites, are found using exploration probes. Quest, sift, multispec.. and so on.
Use 1 multispec to see if there's a site in the system to begin with. Destroy the multi and than drop quest probes at every planet since these exploration sites will spawn within 4au from a planet. After you have set your probes which can be troublesome at times, cloak, move away and press analyze, wait for result.. press analyze.. wait.. until boredom makes you fall of your chair or something else happens.
Once a hit is found, warp to hit, drop another probe with a smaller range that is able to "see" the site according to the accuracy of your hit and rinse and repeat until you get another hit.
Finally your accuracy will drop below 400km and when you warp to it, you'll end up on top or very near to your site.
Have fun and make sure you've got time to spare!
Sites are everywhere, high-sec, low-sec, 0.0, it doesn't matter although we might expect better results from the more risky adventures out there.
A bullet, Laser beam or Plasma charge may have your name on it..... Shrapnel is adressed "To whom it may concern"... |

I think the Drone complex was a Signature. The valaueable of these are the alloys and Tech 2 Rig components from the Commanders. And much more Alloys and Rig components when you get an Escalation.
The other i think was an Anomaly, because there wasn't a gate.
Anomaly are like missions, reduced Bounty, less loot then Asteroid NPCs
Depend on the Signature strengh, lower str. means better/harder Anomaly.
